Disney Lorcana is a trading card game, and that means that players are going to need to be well-versed in how to build their own decks. The Lorcana Starter Decks provide a great jumping-off point for players, but inevitably they'll need to create new decks if they want to explore different strategies and combinations. The rules for building a deck are rather simple and easy to understand, but beyond that, players should also keep in mind a few tips that will help them build good decks. After all, not all legal decks are effective.
Whether players are building a deck with cards they've received from Booster Packs, mixing and matching Starter Decks to create new interesting combinations, or just theorycrafting using the official Disney Lorcana Companion app, it's important to understand the game's deck-building rules. With those figured out, there's an endless amount of combinations players can make.
Disney Lorcana – Deck Building Rules
There are only three rules players have to follow when building a deck in Disney Lorcana:
- The deck must contain at least 60 cards
- The deck may only contain cards from one or two Ink types
- The deck can only have up to four copies of a single card.
The first rule provides the standard Lorcana deck size of 60 cards. It's good to note that there is no upper limit, so there's nothing stopping players from building a deck with 120 or more cards. The second rule requires players to understand the different types of Ink in Disney Lorcana. In summary, players can only have two different colors of cards in their decks.
The final rule states that there can be no more than four copies of a single card in a deck. This doesn't apply to characters that have more than one version (ie. a player could have four Rapunzel, Letting Down Her Hair cards and four Rapunzel, Gifted With Healing cards if they wanted).
Disney Lorcana – Building a Good Deck
As previously mentioned, players could follow the rules above and still end up with a pretty mediocre deck. To avoid this, there are some general guidelines that players should follow. First, try to stick to just 60 cards in a deck. While it is possible to make a deck with many more, that will simply make it harder to find the cards the player needs.
Next, keep an eye on the Ink cost of cards going into a deck. Generally speaking, there should always be more cost 1 cards than cost 2 cards, more cost 2 cards than cost 3 cards, and so on and so forth. It also helps to include a good number of cards (at least 45 out of 60) that can be added to the Inkwell – denoted by the golden circle around their cost.
Aside from that, just experiment with different card combinations. A lot of Disney Lorcana's cards synergize together very well, and half the fun is seeing what kinds of combos players can make with the cards they've got. So long as players keep their decks down to a reasonable size, manage the costs of their cards, and have plenty of cards to add to the Inkwell, their decks should be relatively well-balanced.
