Disney Dreamlight Valley has big plans for 2023, starting with its release of its Early 2023 Content Roadmap. The roadmap details bi-monthly updates for Disney Dreamlight Valley, with April's update focusing on the Lion King franchise as both Simba and Nala become available to recruit. For the first time, these two characters will operate as a single unit, with both Simba and Nala moving and interacting in tandem with each other. This new concept of character pairs could hint at how other fan-favorite duos, such as Timon and Pumbaa, could make their way to the title.

Disney Dreamlight Valley has been available in Early Access since September 2022, but will launch free-to-play later this year. Since release, updates to the game have added plenty of classic Disney and Pixar characters including Woody, Stitch, and Scar, with Encanto's Mirabel set to be the next major addition. As many of these characters are the main hero or villain of their respective films, fans have questioned how Dreamlight Valley will incorporate side characters like Timon and Pumbaa. Its approach to Simba and Nala may be the answer they've been waiting for.

Dreamlight Valley's Simba and Nala Open the Door to More Additions

Players have known that Simba is coming to Dreamlight Valley ever since the Content Roadmap featured his image on April's breakdown. However, Nala's appearance in Dreamlight Valley was announced during the February 2023 Nintendo Direct. Players were surprised to find out that the two lions will operate as a single Valley resident, combining their missions, leveling, and interactions with other visitors. With plenty of memorable duos in Disney's library, Simba and Nala hint at how Dreamlight Valley could incorporate more characters without overwhelming players.

Timon and Pumbaa are among Disney's most popular duos, and up to now their potential arrival in Dreamlight Valley has been a question of form over function. Every major update has brought new individual characters to the title, each requiring their own mission line and residence. Dreamlight Valley's addition of Nala alongside Simba is a pleasant surprise, as it hints at how pairs could be added to strengthen each other's role in the Valley.

Past additions like Prince Eric have created a problem given they exist in the Valley with little purpose outside the story of another resident. Though Eric is appropriately incorporated into Ariel's quest line, players are required to build two large residences before they can interact at all. With so many characters that fans would like to see added to the title, each including narratives that could potentially cross over, Dreamlight Valley's future updates threaten to overwhelm its limited space. By releasing pairs, original duos like Timon and Pumbaa could be incorporated more naturally. This also requires the player to level up one less resident in order to further their interconnected story, with other pairs able to play a part if applicable. What could have been a story between Pumbaa and Simba can now include all four characters and cover a wider range of the source material.

The Festival of Friendship Update will bring Mirabel, Olaf, and more to Dreamlight Valley later this month, with more content sprinkled throughout the rest of 2023. By releasing future characters in pairs, those updates will require less space and material investment from players, and create more cohesive narratives for Dreamlight Valley's many residents. This makes duos such as Timon and Pumbaa not only possible, but favorable additions to the title.

Though fans know what is coming through June, the remainder of Dreamlight Valley's plans for 2023 are sure to feature some surprises. There are plenty of characters that fans would love to see added to their Valleys, and adding them in pairs means Gameloft can present players with a wider range of content that takes up less space. By continuing the trend set by Simba and Nala, the addition of pairs like Timon and Pumbaa could really shape Dreamlight Valley's future.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
