Disgaea 6 is not like other strategy RPGs out there on the Switch. It may look like something familiar on the scale of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. For example, characters move on a set of tiles and it is turn-based. It shares many aspects like that with these two series but it is important to know before jumping in that there are many differences.

The Disgaea series from NIS is well-known for piling mechanics on top of mechanics so learning the ropes can be tricky. Leveling up quickly can help players take down difficult challenges much faster so anyone picking up Defiance of Destiny will want to know-how.

Updated July 4, 2022 by Rhenn Taguiam: With players having access to the complete Disgaea 6 experience via the Disgaea 6 Complete collection, fans of the recent installment of the acclaimed comedy-RPG franchise would likely want to get overpowered pretty quickly to maximize the enjoyable chaos the Disgaea games are known for.

As Disgaea 6 Complete has just released on June 28, 2022, there’s still ample time for fans to get a headstart and ensure maximum mayhem through level-up tips such as exploring certain areas, capitalizing on quick attacks, and maximizing game mechanics.

Changes To Disgaea 6

The leveling-up system in the Disgaea series has remained mostly unchanged. Characters who used abilities on themselves or enemies on the battlefield would get experience. They could even level up in the middle of a battle.

That has changed with Disgaea 6. Characters instead share experience rewarded after a map is completed. This allows players to more evenly level up characters without having to use them in certain ways. A healer killing enemies was tricky in the past games for example.

Adjust The Cheat Levels

The cheat shop from Disgaea 6

There is a cheat shop in the hub world that allows players to adjust certain allocation points distributed in the game. This shop has existed for a couple of entries in the Disgaea series now and it remains unchanged for Disgaea 6. It was a great addition to the series as cheats used to be more prevalent in video games so it was nice to see it return in some way.

Every meter starts at a hundred by default for things such as experience and skill points. At the start of the game, one can lower a meter down to ninety and distribute those ten points to another meter. For example, one could earn 110% for experience. The more chapters one completes in the game then the more one can take away from these meters. This allows them to stack more percentages on experience. This is a must for quick leveling up.

Early Levels To Grind

The very best stage to grind on is Rich Man’s Plaza which is found a couple of stages into the second chapter of Disgaea 6. This has players facing off against the hero Yarmada by himself. He does have the power to resurrect a few times but even with that ability, he isn’t that challenging.

The nice thing about Yarmada is that he is a self-proclaimed experience booster in the story. That is absolutely true in the gameplay as well. Pay attention to how much experience is earned after each stage and weigh that on top of how challenging and how long it takes to complete. Once it makes sense to switch over from Rich Man’s Plaza, do it. Just be aware this is the best stage for at least a third of Disgaea 6 if not more.

The Setup For Success

Characters and Classes in Disgaea 6

One of the best ways to approach power-leveling in Disgaea 6 would be maximizing its available level-up mechanics. While the Cheat Shop is always an obvious choice, here are additional preparations to ensure players maximize the EXP they receive:

  • Mastering a Class: A character that maximizes their Class gets an extra 300% experience. This can be purchased for a rather hefty price, but it’s worth the EXP boost, especially on higher levels.
  • Master Every Class: Doing the Class Mastery further, mastering every Class will allow players to boost their Eviltiy Limit to 22, which can be extremely efficient in combat.
  • Gather Specific Scrolls: There are certain Quests that provide special Scrolls that provide stat boosts. Players may want to farm these maps to get Scrolls for all their characters. These include World Is Mine (30% HL, Mana, Experience), Floating Forward (30% EXP), and Doubting Angels (30% Mana).

Explore Quick Match Enders

A combo attack among Disgaea 6 Characters

Unlike other RPGs, Disgaea 6 offers various damage features unique to the franchise. Instead of simply being able to damage enemies with mere melee attacks, spell attacks, or monster attacks, the Disgaea title offers various mechanisms to dish out mean damage to others. In the context of leveling up quickly, players need to maximize these opportunities and find ways to deal maximum damage to quickly end matches and farm more efficiently. These combat options include:

  • Combos: When different characters attack the same enemy, they produce Combos or stacks of increasingly powerful damage. Each attack dealt to this enemy increases by 10% per new character, meaning it’s ideal to have weak characters attack first and strongest characters attack last.
  • Team Attack: When a character with adjacent allies attacks an opponent, there’s a chance for these adjacent allies to join in - giving both a special animation and boosted damage. The first character still does normal damage, whereas each one helping them gives damage worth 75% base attack. In Disgaea 6, up to 10 characters can attack all at once.
  • Tower Attack: As fans may know, a character can carry a lot of characters above them provided they are adjacent to each other. While this is extremely efficient for scattering allies around the battlefield, it also helps in combat. With the right calculation, forming a tower of allies in front of an opponent and then attacking them will form a Tower Attack that combines all the damage output of every unit in the troupe.

Stay In Quick-Grinding Areas

Royal Chamber 2 in Disgaea 6

As with other RPGs, one of the best ways to grind in Disgaea 6 is to stay within some of its rather grindiest areas. Players who already have a winning combo in mind should take note of rather “easy” locations that they can spam for hours on end in order to earn levels, skill points, and more efficient ways of maximizing their stats.

Fans may already know that they can tinker with the Cheat Shop to make things more advantageous for them. However, certain locations in various areas also work extremely well as farming locations. These include:

  • The Royal Chamber 2 in Neo-Human World for much faster progression at +20 Star Difficulty.
  • The Griffon Chamber in Overlord’s Keep for the mid-game grind to late-game grind.
  • The Bell of Blessing in Peaceful World. This in particular is perhaps the best farming area in the game, as it can net 150 million EXP a pop when the Cheat Shop is set at +1000 EXP at Maximum Difficulty.

Remember To Super-Reincarnate

A character in Disgaea 6 performing a special move

One of the most unique Disgaea game features to be introduced for Disgaea 6 characters would be the Super-Reincarnation system. Thanks to this gameplay mechanic, players don’t necessarily just need to be in Level 99,999,999 to maximize the endgame. Rather, “resetting” character progress over and over again allows players to gather Karma and boost their base stats.

This is extremely important by the time players face ridonkulous opponents with millions’ worth of HP, as players need equally-ridiculous stats to take them on. Thanks to Super-Reincarnation, high-enough base stats allows players to gather as much as millions of these numbers by the time they hit max level. Spamming this system often enough can create a character extremely potent at Level 1 that they’re ready to break the game sooner than players think.

Putting The Game On Autopilot

One of the new mechanics introduced in the series for Disgaea 6 makes leveling up in this game a breeze. Players can now utilize an auto-battle system that has characters complete maps by themselves. The AI isn’t capable of handling complex maps that involve having to use warping tiles or throwing but the mechanic is still good for the most part.

There is also a way to have them repeat a stage. So if one puts their characters on auto-battle and sets a stage like Rich Man’s Plaza on repeat, characters won’t stop until they die or the player intervenes. However, the Switch is not capable of staying on without going to sleep 24/7.

The best thing to do instead is to have it next to wherever one is resting. If one plans to watch a movie then just tap the Switch every once and a while to keep it awake. Going to work at a desk job? Have that propped up in the background? There are so many ways to utilize this new feature which kind of breaks the game. Whether that’s true or not doesn't matter — it's the best way to level up.

Use The Item Research Squad

The hospital reward menu from Disgaea 6

Besides leveling up the squad, it is also important to level up items too. The Disgaea series has always had a mechanic called the Item World. This allows players to literally jump into an item. Stages then are randomized and the more floors one completes then the more that item will level up.

Don’t focus on gear that can be bought from the store. Instead, focus on accessories won from the hospital. There are pretty rare accessories in it, especially the bottom tier that starts with the Imperial Seal. That item, and the variations of it after, boost most stats. Leveling up these items will surely beef up the party.

Like the auto-battle system in Disgaea 6, there is a way to automate the item leveling process via the research squad. Choose three strong characters to go into an item and watch it go up. Time passes after players complete a stage themselves. Sometimes this will boost the item one level and other times it can shoot up multiple levels. It all depends on the item’s strength and the strength of the chosen party.

Disgaea 6 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch.
