One of the biggest advantages the Disgaea series has over some other RPG franchises is its humor. There is not a funnier RPG around or at least not one that tries as hard with its jokes. Not all of them land but it’s that attempt at humor, as bad as it can be, that adds to the charm.

The only game series that comes to mind is Borderlands which is a whole different beast. The humor wouldn’t be what it is without a strong cast and Disgaea 6 has some of the strongest standouts in the series so far. From comedic timing to power on the battlefield, who among the dozens are worth investing time into in this new Switch game from NIS?

WARNING: This contains spoilers.

10 Hero Yarmada

Hero Yarmada first appears in the Human World as a boss. He was a failed hero that King Misedor tried to imbue as a true hero with wads of cash. He failed to defeat the God of Destruction but he got too used to the good life to give the hero business up. This makes him a little crazy. He’s not a big character in the game but every time he pops up is a treat. He’s also a great character to level up against.

9 Melodia

Melodia from Disgaea 6

Melodia is the second character Zed recruits in Disgaea 6, found inside the Musical World. She's like the Disgaea equivalent of a Disney Princess. They've been in RPGs before but that’s beside the point. Melodia is a little too into herself, which can be as annoying as it is endearing at times. However, her bluntness can also create some great comedic moments in the game.

8 King Misedor

King Misedor is the king of the Human World. His big contribution to society is trying to solve everything through money. Soon enough he discovers that money can’t buy everything and that many characters only find him tolerable because of his wealth.

This can create some good self-deprecating jokes, covering all sorts of unsavory aspects of his character. Just as it's said throughout Disgaea 6, King Misedor is super effective.

7 Zed

Zed is the main character of Disgaea 6. A typical arc for main characters in the series is them starting off rough around the edges, but then growing through time. Even when he does grow, Zed doesn’t become as likable as other protagonists in the series like Laharl from the first Disgaea game. He’s not nice, but Zed’s jerky attitude does give him some of the best lines in the game.

6 Cerberus

What makes Zed more tolerable is his trusty canine companion, Cerberus. He’s a good straight man to Zed’s more offbeat attitude, often giving some blunt advice in the process. However, he does become a villain in the second act of Disgaea 6 which is a huge surprise. Why he decides to create the God of Destruction is understandable in its own right. He’s also just a good character to root against at that point. Every RPG needs a good villain like Cerberus.

5 Bieko

Bieko is Zed’s sister and is one of the most soft-spoken characters in Disgaea 6. She was seemingly created to melt the hearts of both players and characters in the game. This strategy works especially well when everyone finds out Bieko is dead.

In actuality, Zed was lying at first and she was turned into the God of Destruction which plays into Cerberus' story. Disgaea 6 could have ended on a tragedy, but let’s just say her transformation isn’t final.

4 Overlord Ivar

A cutscene featuring mutual characters from Disgaea 6

Overlord Ivar is kind of a dopey character. As an Overlord of the Underworld, among many in the Disgaea series, he doesn’t do much. What makes him so memorable then is how he reacts to all of the news Zed tells him. From his sister Bieko to his many failed attempts at defeating the God of Destruction, his reactions and lines are great. His ineptitude as an Overlord is priceless although he also has his triumphant moments.

3 Naive

A cutscene featuring mutual characters from Disgaea 6

Naive is Melodia’s twin sister and plays the role of an evil twin of sorts. Melodia loves everything that’s good in the world along with happy endings. Naive instead wishes for dark stories and unpleasant endings. Watching Naive get under Melodia’s skin makes both characters a treat. Melodia would not be as good without her even though Naive does not have a huge role in the game.

2 Majolene

Majolene from Disgaea 6

Majolene is the principal of a magical school. She begins as a typical old sage-like character from any anime or RPG before accidentally turning herself into a cutesy Magical Girl.

Her reaction to this transformation is great as she finds it to be rather unbecoming of someone so dignified as herself. Seeing everyone else in the party love it is where the real comedy comes from.

1 Piyori

Piyori from Disgaea 6

Japan is pretty huge on Power Rangers, or Super Sentai. The fandom is so big in Japan that the franchise gets parodied a lot in other media like Disgaea. The Disgaea games call them Prism Rangers. Piyori is the first Prism Ranger to be a main member of the party, though other Rangers have been playable before. Her actions are over the top and seeing her sense of justice get corrupted by Zed over time is one of the best things in the game.
