The Dirt franchise started all the way back in 1998, and now it's coming to next-generation consoles. As part of the May 7 Inside Xbox presentation, it was confirmed that Dirt 5 from Codemasters would be coming to the Xbox Series X, promising to "usher in the next generation of racing."

Dirt 5 is bringing "new features, new innovations, and a fresh approach" to the franchise. It will feature the signature off-road racing that fans have come to expect, and promises that "no two races are ever the same."

The Dirt 5 trailer was pretty impressive, confirming that the Xbox Series X will deliver some sharp-looking visuals. Anyone excited to play Dirt 5 after seeing the announcement trailer should know that the game will be available to play beginning October 2020, and those that buy the Xbox One version will be able to upgrade to the Xbox Series X version for free thanks to the Smart Delivery feature.

Dirt 5 is the first main series Dirt game since Dirt 4 launched in 2017. The most recent game in the series, Dirt Rally 2.0, is a spin-off of the main series; it's to the Dirt franchise as Forza Horizon is to Forza Motorsport. Since Dirt 5 is a return to the main series, there may be even higher expectations from fans, though the long-running racing game franchise has earned strong reviews fairly consistently, so there's little reason to think that the new game will be any different.

Dirt 5  is in development for Xbox Series X.
