Dinkum is a fun yet challenging farming simulator. Players can enjoy all kinds of outdoor gameplay, including fishing. However, fishing is surprisingly tricky, and players may initially feel stuck when trying to reel in the marine life.

Fishing is a way to expand on the Pedia, a handy guide that documents all wildlife, plants, and mining materials found on the island. Players can earn Dinks, the island currency, and get Permit Points that allow them to get mining, logging, and fishing licenses. So naturally, players must obtain a license before doing any of those tasks.

How to Get a Fishing License in Dinkum

Dinkum Fishing License

Players may want to dive in, but before they can even get a fishing rod, they must first apply for a Fishing License.

This is done by talking to Fletch, the business office manager, and exchanging Permit Points for licenses. Players can harvest plants, pick up seashells or catch bugs to complete Milestones to earn these. Whenever players achieve a Milestone, the second tier opens up, usually increasing the number of items needed before players can get even more Permit Points. It costs 255 Permit Points to get a Fishing License.

How to Get a Fishing Rod

After players have the correct paperwork, they can visit John, the shop owner, and snag a fishing rod by spending some Dinks. Dinks are earned by selling anything you find on the island to John.

John shows up on the player's second day on the island. He stays at the visitor center and sells items such as shovels, bug-catching nets, axes, and fishing rods. The great thing about John is he will buy all the local island materials that players find just by walking around. Players can purchase fishing rods for 1,260 Dinks.

How to Fish

Getting the license and rod is the easiest part of fishing. Players can fish in any body of water near the island, and there are some mini islands a short swim away, although players should beware of sharks. The fish will be visible in the water, so find a spot that gives good access to them. Here are the steps players must take to fish:

  • Select the fishing rod from the item list
  • Throw the reel towards the fish.
    • Right-clicking and holding the mouse button will allow the player to throw it further.
  • Wait until the fish's attention is on the rod; it will move the bobber up and down.
  • Start reeling when the fish splashes, as it will escape otherwise.
  • Watch the fishing stamina bar.
    • This is crucial because if it empties, the fish escapes. If players try to reel the fish in while it's pulling away from them, it will deplete quickly.

  • Slowly reel the fish in when it's not struggling.
  • Repeat until you catch the fish.

Players can expect to lose a few of the first fish they have a go at, but don't let this be discouraging. Catching fish comes quite easily with some patience and diligence.
