There are still a few months until Diablo 4's upcoming Vessel of Hatred DLC launches, but thanks to a first look from the expansion's trailer, the RPG is gearing up for a harrowing storyline. The gruesome sneak peek showed Neyrelle taking the Soulstone that holds Mephisto's spirit to the intriguing new land of Nahantu, and it looks like the story of Diablo 4 is taking a dark direction with her character.

The trailer for Vessel of Hatred is a hellish nightmare, as Neyrelle holding possession of the Mephisto Soulstone for so long is starting to take a toll on her, both physically and mentally. In the cinematic, she is on her way to the jungles of Nahantu, as the power of Mephisto is quite literally leaking through the Soulstone, showing that there isn't much time left until he takes hold of Neyrelle. This could very well be setting up Vessel of Hatred to feature a heartbreaking boss fight, as Mephisto may soon gain power over Neyrelle.

The Vessel of Hatred DLC Hints at Neyrelle's Mephisto Possession

Having possession of the Soulstone that contains Mephisto's essence, Neyrelle is now on a journey to find a way to properly dispose of, or at least deal with, the dangerous object. En route to Nahantu, Neyrelle chants a prayer to Akarat, as she is determined to find his tomb. Her determination to get to Akarat's tomb implies that it is the best possible way to deal with the Soulstone and hopefully put a stop to Mephisto. However, the trailer for Vessel of Hatred also hints that she may not make it to the tomb in time, at least not as herself.

Neyrelle Struggling to Resist Mephisto

Vessel of Hatred's trailer was a delightfully disturbing preview of where Diablo 4's story is headed, but the most obvious point from the cinematic is that Neyrelle is really struggling with fighting off Mephisto's energy. Not only is she noticeably getting physically ill, shown by her coughing and feverishly sweating, she's having full-blown hallucinations that are intensely graphic. Mephisto is a force to be reckoned with, and his essence captured in the Soulstone is weighing down heavily on Neyrelle.

As Mephisto's power becomes more difficult to fight, it is highly possible that the Lord of Hatred will take over Neyrelle, possessing her completely. The title of Vessel of Hatred leads to the thought that the Soulstone itself is the vessel, but the vessel may actually be Neyrelle. Vessel of Hatred is bringing forth changes for Diablo 4, and one of the biggest differences could be Neyrelle's role in the story, as she is potentially forced to turn from a hero to a villain.

The Vessel of Hatred DLC launches on October 8.

Vessel of Hatred Turning Up the Heat

Although cinematic trailers aren't an indication of actual gameplay, Vessel of Hatred's first look is a spine-chilling teaser of what could be on the horizon for Diablo 4. The expansion promises a deeper dive into the game's lore. From Neyrelle's journey to the introduction of Nahantu and the new Spiritborn class, this DLC will hopefully bring some exciting new features to life. It's not yet confirmed if Neyrelle will actually play the role of main antagonist, but the trailer heavily implies that this could be the case.

There could be hope for Neyrelle, but as of now, it's not looking good for the character. Her fate will be revealed once Vessel of Hatred launches, but there is no denying that Mephisto is slowly succeeding in breaking her down. The prospect of potentially fighting Neyrelle will be a heartbreaking moment, but it's also a reminder of what a harsh hellscape the land of Sanctuary truly is.
