A Diablo 4 player has carried out a community request and fully reset their Paragon board, confirming that it cost them nearly 9 million in-game gold to do so. One of the biggest criticisms of Diablo 4 within the ARPG's fanbase has been the difficulty and cost associated with respecing, or resetting character progression to try a new build. However, a specific price for resetting every Paragon Point hasn't been widely confirmed, making the conversation somewhat muddied. Now that a Diablo 4 player has established the cost, the topic can be talked about in more detail.

Progression in Diablo 4 is split into two different level-based structures. Between level 1 and 50, players earn Skill Points that can be invested in active and passive abilities. After level 50, players earn Paragon Points, which can be used for passive buffs that strengthen the player in simple and complex ways. At level 100, with all progression complete, players will have 58 Skill Points and 225 Paragon Points. Skill Points can be easily reset, but resetting Paragon Points requires individually refunding each slot throughout the Paragon boards.

Reddit user TSXWave decided to see how much it would cost to refund every Paragon Point, "so you don't have to." Their Reddit post shows before and after screenshots, with zero available Paragon Points and 225 available Paragon Points. Before refunding, they have 33,354,444 gold, and after they have 24,508,119 gold. That's a cost of 8,846,335 gold in total.

A more granular breakdown shows that it cost TSXWave 39,317 gold for each individual Paragon slot to be refunded. Refunding 225 slots, each of which costs 39,317 gold, is how the price skyrocketed up to nearly 9 million gold. The price does not fluctuate after each slot is refunded. However, as high-level Diablo 4 players can attest, there's no real way to choose a new build without resetting virtually all Paragon Points.

Unfortunately, TSXWave's work didn't simplify the conversation regarding whether resetting Paragon Points is too costly. Many of the replies in the Reddit thread say that 9 million gold is very little at level 100. Others argue it's still a substantial amount, though nothing compared to re-rolling affixes on gear. It's nearly universally agreed that it's still very tedious and annoying that players have to refund each slot on its own, though.

Blizzard has rarely commented on Diablo 4 player frustrations regarding swapping builds, though it has conveyed rather clearly there aren't any improvements to the system coming soon. Blizzard has instead encouraged players to roll alts, or wait for Diablo 4's seasons to start in order to try new character builds. Otherwise, swapping or experimenting with builds will remain cumbersome. Perhaps there's value in making clear that changing builds shouldn't be simple, cheap, or fast. Perhaps it's something Blizzard should have considered more heavily during development.

Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
