Diablo 4 is an action role-playing game that has impressed both old and new players of the franchise. A large part of playing this title is refining the player's build through various bits of equipment as well as collecting the resources needed to improve them.

Instead of searching for a lot of these materials players can purchase various things or pay for certain services through the large number of merchants that can be found across Sanctuary. However, not all these resources are as useful as they first seem and that's why it is important for a player to never buy these following items from a Merchant—at least, on most occasions.

7 Buying Weapons And Armor From The First Merchant In The Game

Not far into the prologue of Diablo 4, players will meet their first merchant in a suspiciously welcoming town. While it may be tempting to spend the small amount of gold they have earned so far, this merchant will have an abysmal range of weapons that will not benefit anyone in the long run.

At this point, players are likely to naturally find a lot of gear that will be better than what the player is wearing. Therefore, it is simply a waste of gold to invest in new items this early, especially if they are only common in quality.

6 Various Gear From The Purveyor Of Curiosities

Gold isn't the only currency that can be earned while exploring the world of Diablo 4. Another currency that players are likely to pick up is Murmuring Obols. This currency is earned through completing nearby events in which multiple people can participate.

Murmuring Obols also have a limit that can be carried, which may make players less cautious about spending them, even though there are certain uses that should be avoided. This merchant allows the player to gamble away these Obols for a chance at better gear. Avoid spending it on items not needed in the future, as these Obols may be better suited for buying jewelry.

5 Common Weapons At Any Level

Merchants commonly reset during every gaming session in real-time. Certain merchants sell different things, and their wares will quickly change if a player doesn't purchase them promptly. However, this doesn't mean a player needs to be careless with their gold.

Common weapons are something players should consistently avoid buying, not just for their lack of armor and damage but also due to their rarity lacking the capability of being upgraded. Common goods have little purpose, especially when reaching higher levels where upgrading a good roll becomes incredibly important.

4 Unsocketing Gems At A Jeweler

Besides collecting new gear that can be upgraded, all armor, weapons, and jewelry can come with or be installed with sockets that can hold gems. These gems are collected through exploration of Sanctuary, by opening certain chests or defeating enemies. Players are likely to find plenty of crude gems that can then be upgraded or simply installed onto a player's item of choice.

Once this gear needs to be replaced, it is possible to pay for the gem to be removed from the gear so that it can still be used. In many cases, the most common gems are easy for a player to find and therefore paying to refine the gem is cheaper than removing it from an item.

3 Mid-Rarity Armor With Subpar Stats

As seen with common weapons, other gear that is also of a lower rarity shouldn't be purchased from merchants. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. When searching through the various merchants in Diablo 4 players are likely to see the wide range of stats on their gear.

In some situations, these stats may be beneficial to a specific build, and therefore, it is acceptable to purchase this armor—especially if it's of rare or better quality. Players should be sure to examine the gear they are thinking of buying closely, as well as consider how it could benefit their build. If a positive cannot be found about the armor, then it is better to avoid it.

2 Refining Ingredients Into Others At An Alchemist

A feature that many players of Diablo 4 forget exists is the possibility of making potions that can benefit the player in a variety of ways. Getting a hold of these ingredients is quite straightforward as many of them can be found while exploring the entirety of Sanctuary.

These materials can then be taken to an Alchemist to be turned into useful potions; however, this merchant also has another feature. The Alchemist can also be used to transform resources into others for a price. While in some situations this may be beneficial especially when certain materials become rare to find, refining common ingredients into other common ingredients is unnecessary.

1 Basic Rings Or Amulets

Continuing the past theme of basic armor and weapons, amulets and rings are another way for players to improve certain stats of their builds. On many occasions, players will find plenty of jewelry options while adventuring in the dark fantasy of Diablo 4 though it is also possible to purchase these items from a jeweler, too.

Like many other merchants, their goods will change periodically, and it is up to the player to decide what is or isn't a good purchase to make. As usual, players should avoid buying common rings or necklaces as these are less likely to make a difference to the player's stats in the long run.

Diablo 4 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
