Diablo 4 has been a long time coming, and players who got to experience the beta for the latest entry in Blizzard's iconic ARPG series were given a taste of how gameplay would unfold in the world of Sanctuary. While co-op has been a staple feature of the series, Diablo 4 is taking multiplayer to the next level by incorporating MMO elements such as overworld bosses and the ability to see other players in-game without being part of a party. One aspect that has yet to be addressed is the interaction co-op parties will have on the game's Capstone Dungeons, which could spell trouble for groups looking to advance World Tiers together.

Diablo 4's World Tier mechanic allows the difficulty of the game to scale according to the tier. At first, players will have access to World Tier 1 and 2, offering a minimal challenge for new players at Tier 1 and increased challenge with more rewards at Tier 2. In order to reach World Tier 3 and 4, players will have to complete Diablo 4's main campaign and battle their way through a Capstone Dungeon to advance to the next tier. While this mechanic offers the potential for great endgame co-op content, it could end up being a hassle if only the party leader gets to advance their World Tier.

Diablo 4's Capstone Dungeons Could End Up Being a Headache to Grind for Co-op Parties

For veteran Diablo players who want a real challenge, completing the main campaign and tackling the first Capstone Dungeon should be a priority as the new enemy effects and bonuses granted at World Tier 3 seem like they will be a huge step up from the previous World Tier. Moving up to this tier also grants players access to Diablo 4's Nightmare dungeons, which make up a large portion of the endgame content. However, accessing this higher World Tier may be easier said than done as players will have to complete the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon located in Kyovashad in World Tier 2.

As if World Tier 3 weren't difficult enough, Diablo 4 includes an additional World Tier that can only be accessed by completing the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon in World Tier 3. Moving up to World Tier 4 further powers up the enemies players will face and adds Ancestral Items as potential drops. With how difficult these endgame World Tiers are, Diablo 4 pushes players towards co-op as they will need to optimize their builds among a group in order to stand the best chance of survival against the increasingly monstrous hordes.

With the need to tackle Capstone Dungeons as a party becoming more and more necessary at higher World Tiers, Diablo 4 could become very tedious very quickly if only the party host gets to advance to the next World Tier after completing the dungeon. This system would end up forcing groups of players to potentially grind the same Diablo 4 Capstone Dungeon multiple times with different players as hosts just to get everyone to the same World Tier. Having to do these dungeons multiple times for multiple World Tiers would only serve to make the endgame content less accessible than it already is.

Instead, Diablo 4 needs to allow all participants in a party to advance to the next World Tier of their home world regardless of their status within the party after completing a Capstone Dungeon. While it makes sense to lock the endgame content behind increasingly challenging tasks in order to keep players engaged, there is a balance between a fun challenge and a repetitive, tedious task that can take the fun out of the game. Blizzard will have to tread carefully with Diablo 4's endgame content so it doesn't inadvertently become harder than it already intends to be.

Diablo 4 releases June 6 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
