Highlights

  • Patch 1.2.3 in Diablo 4 will introduce the Abattoir of Zir, a new endgame activity inspired by the popular Greater Rifts from Diablo 3.
  • Players will have ten minutes to defeat enough enemies to spawn and defeat a boss in the Abattoir of Zir, which comes with twenty-five difficulty tiers.
  • The Abattoir of Zir will offer unique rewards, such as the Tears of Blood Paragon Glyph, and players will need to complete the seasonal journey to access it.

Greater Rifts are coming to Diablo 4, as the Abattoir of Zir is set to debut in Patch 1.2.3 – a new endgame activity that aims to replicate what made Greater Rifts so fun in Reaper of Souls. The parallels between Diablo 4 and its predecessor are obvious, as Diablo 3 enjoyed comparable success in 2012, yet eventually earned the reputation of a flawed game with a tedious and unrewarding endgame grind. It took the efforts of Reaper of Souls to turn Diablo 3 around, and many players can't help but wonder if Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred will do the same for the sequel.

If recent Diablo 4 leaks are to be believed, the expansion will debut the Spiritborn class, as it will take players back to Kurast in their hunt for Mephisto. However, fans won't have to wait till Vessel of Hatred to experience a plethora of endgame improvements, as the developers are planning to debut the Diablo 4 equivalent of Greater Rifts in Patch 1.2.3, set to release in December.

The Abattoir of Zir is Diablo 4's Answer to Greater Rifts

Midway through the Season of Blood in Diablo 4, players who complete their seasonal journey will be able to enter the Abattoir of Zir, where they will have ten minutes to kill enough enemies to spawn and defeat a boss. The Abattoir of Zir will have twenty-five difficulty tiers in Diablo 4, and upon a character's first completion of the abattoir, they will receive a unique Tears of Blood Paragon Glyph. This glyph will seemingly scale all the way to Level 210, and will play a role similar to Legendary Gems from Diablo 3.

The entrance to the Abattoir of Zir will be found in Ked Bardu, the main hub for the Dry Steppes region in Diablo 4, and in order to progress through the tiers, players will have to craft Bloodforged Sigils at the Occultist and then complete the Abattoir within the time limit. Doing so will unlock the next Bloodforged Sigil tier, progressing all the way to Tier 25. Player reception to the Abattoir of Zir has been mostly positive across social media, though some fans would prefer if the system wasn't locked behind completing the seasonal journey in Diablo 4, but was itself part of it.

Given that Season 3 will introduce Leaderboards to Diablo 4, fans can expect to see more than just Nightmare Dungeons in the player rankings. Though it remains to be seen if the Abattoir of Zir will only be available for six weeks at the end of each Diablo 4 season, it's certainly a positive direction for the game to go after the controversial Season 1.
