In the months leading up to Devil May Cry 5's release, Capcom revealed that the game would have three playable characters. The three playable characters in Devil May Cry 5 include series mainstay and demon hunter extraordinaire Dante, Devil May Cry 4's Nero, and a newcomer named V. V's role in the story and his mysterious past have been a well-kept secret by Capcom, but now that Devil May Cry 5 is available to the masses, we now know exactly who he is. Please note that this article will have major spoilers for the plot of Devil May Cry 5, so read on at your own risk.

Before we get into the late-game revelations about V, it's necessary to discuss who players know him as throughout most of the experience. V is depicted as much younger than Nero and Dante, but he has limited mobility and walks with a cane that doubles as a weapon. Since V's body is weak, he relies on his trio of demon pets to do most of his fighting for him, consisting of a wise-cracking bird, a deadly panther, and a hulking monstrosity known as Nightmare.

As the plot of Devil May Cry 5 progresses, V's true identity is revealed. We learn that V is the human side of Dante's brother Vergil, created after Vergil stabbed himself with his sword, the Yamato. This allowed Vergil to separate his human side and demon side, with his demon side manifesting itself as the ultra-powerful beast Urizen.

At the end of Devil May Cry 5, V and Urizen eventually merge, allowing Vergil to become whole again, but with even more power than he had before. This reborn version of Vergil serves as Devil May Cry 5's true final boss, and players do battle with him multiple times before the credits roll.

Since Vergil is one of the more popular characters in the Devil May Cry series, it's no surprise that Capcom figured out a way to revive him for Devil May Cry 5. It's possible that he will even become a playable character at some point down the road, perhaps in the Bloody Palace DLC update, but Capcom has yet to comment on that possibility.

Devil May Cry 5 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
