Detective Pikachu is now in theaters worldwide, and as expected, the game is stuffed with easter eggs and references to the Pokemon franchise. This includes obvious nods to things like the Kanto region, as well as more obscure easter eggs, like the Pokemon Stadium announcer reference. However, Detective Pikachu has non-Pokemon easter eggs as well, including a Home Alone easter egg that has bizarre implications if you look into it.

In one of the earliest scenes of the Detective Pikachu movie, Tim Goodman heads to his father's apartment. When he arrives, a "detective movie" is playing on the TV, but the movie that's playing doesn't actually exist. It's the movie-within-a-movie that was made specifically for Home Alone called Angels with Filthy Souls.

Since Angels with Filthy Souls only exists as an actual film in the Home Alone series, some may come away with the idea that the filmmakers are trying to insinuate that Home Alone and Detective Pikachu exist in the same universe. Unfortunately for anyone hoping to see Kevin McCallister or the Wet Bandits pop up in a future movie in the rumored Pokemon cinematic universe, though, the Home Alone easter egg is just meant to be a fun nod to the classic Christmas film and nothing more.

According to Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman, who spoke to FreshFiction.tv in a recent interview, "It was always scripted there was some film noir-y, detective film there. Just as a laugh, we got the movie that they shot for Home Alone off of YouTube at some point and used it as a temp. We could never beat it! It got to the point of it being well, why not try to license it. We got it cleared, miraculously, and it became this funny inside joke just to us."

While Home Alone was obviously never going to have a legitimate crossover with a Pokemon film, that doesn't mean that Detective Pikachu doesn't set up other films in a possible franchise. It's true that Detective Pikachu has no end credits scene, but the film itself leaves the door open for the Kanto region to appear in the future, and Legendary Pictures actually started work on the sequel months ago.

Before fans get too excited about a Pokemon cinematic universe, Detective Pikachu will have to do well at the box office. As it stands, the Detective Pikachu movie has strong reviews (for a video game movie) and is expected to have a decent box office haul this weekend, so chances are good that more films in the franchise will be produced.
