After nearly four years since its premiere, Detective Pikachu is allegedly getting a sequel, and it's currently in the works. There have been rumors in the past that a Detective Pikachu movie sequel was already in the works, which would allegedly feature a mystery Pokemon, but fans didn't get concrete updates since it was first reported in early 2019.

Detective Pikachu is a mystery and comedy film that follows aspiring Pokemon trainer Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) as he tries to find his dad with the help of Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds). The adaptation based on the video game of the same name became a beloved film thanks to its entertaining story and action, and the adorable, almost life-like Pokemon that were shown all throughout. Many fans might also consider Detective Pikachu as a movie that managed to break the video game adaptation curse.

For fans wondering whether the Detective Pikachu sequel was still happening or not, a representative from Legendary Entertainment told Polygon that the movie was still "in active development." However, they didn't confirm who was working on it as original writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez were no longer involved with the film. Meanwhile, the Pokemon Company didn't provide any comment about the rumored sequel. No other information was given about the future of Detective Pikachu.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu 2019

Apart from the Detective Pikachu movie sequel, fans have also been waiting for the second Detective Pikachu game. The first title was released in 2018 for the Nintendo 3DS to mostly positive reviews and sold well on the Nintendo eShop. Shortly after the movie adaptation premiered, The Pokemon Company announced that it was coming out with Detective Pikachu 2 for the Nintendo Switch, which has yet to be released.

As a spin-off Pokemon game, Detective Pikachu brought something new to the battle monsters genre as it followed a narrative story, which many players likened to an anime series. It would be interesting to see how the story of Detective Pikachu 2 would be different from the first game and the movie adaptation.

Fortunately, players don't have a shortage of new Nintendo games as titles like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Fire Emblem Engage are already out, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released in May. At the very least they could spend their time going through these games while patiently waiting for the Detective Pikachu sequel, both the movie and Switch game.
