Destiny 2: 5 Tips And Tricks For Onslaught

Onslaught is the new activity introduced in Destiny 2's Into the Light update. Here are a few helpful tricks to survive the game's new horde mode.

Destiny 2 players are no strangers to Exotic Quests, but this one is one of the harder ones. Players will want to be fast to claim this Exotic Scout Rifle before Season of the Deep closes out in August. Season 21 will see players embark on the dangers in the Methane Sea of Titan, and here’s how to get Wicked Implement in Destiny 2.

Updated on May 2, 2024, by Jake Fillery: As players brace themselves for The Final Shape, they might want to prepare by getting all the weapons that they can get their hands on before the inevitable showdown with the Witness comes through. That said, one of the best weapons for Stasis builds is Wicked Implement, and if players want to get their hands on it, they can follow the guide below, providing them with one of the best scout rifles in Destiny 2, and an entertaining quest that will have them venture through deep waters and the stars themselves.

Purchase Season Of The Deep

Destiny-2-Season-Of-The-Deep-Ahsa-Sloane

From May 23 to August 22 of 2023, players with the Destiny 2 season pass could access Season 21, Season of the Deep, and the new activities within, which consisted of fishing across the Sol system and venturing to Titan's ocean floor in Salvage and Deep Dives. Since Destiny 2 is currently in Season 23's Season of the Wish, returning players who had not purchased Season of the Deep will need to purchase the Lightfall Annual Pass, providing them the opportunity to unlock the content within Season of the Deep, as players cannot access the activities and quests without it.

Activate All Broken Blades & Access The Whetstone Exotic Mission

Since Season of the Deep has been and gone, most players accessing the activity might have already completed the Wicked Implement quest, which is great for players who are yet to claim this great prize. Players can skip all the fishing steps if they join a Fireteam with any player who has all three Broken Blades or has completed the Wicked Implement quest. With this important member of the team, players will want to access a Deep Dive activity from the HELM and locate all Broken Blades within said activity to unlock the Whetstone exotic mission.

Fish For The Whispering Mothcarp On Savathun's Throne World

savathun's throne world fishing location

For the first step of the quest, players will need to venture to Savathun’s Throne World. There is a secret objective that lies within the Miasma Fish Pond, where players need to put aside their weapons against the Scorn and Lucent Hive to go fishing until they have gotten lucky and recovered the Whispering Mothcarp fish.

The Whispering Mothcarp is one of the Exotic fish in Destiny 2, and players will need to catch this great bounty if they are going to progress through the steps of this secret Destiny 2 Exotic quest. Considering the catch rate for Exotic fish is completely RNG based, some players might wait a while, but it’s vitally important that players just stick to it, and keep trying to use their Bait and luck to find a Whispering Mothcarp in Savathun’s Throne World.

The only real trick to fishing in Destiny 2 is patience. However, players can influence the RNG of the Fish Pond ever so slightly by not picking up the fish they catch immediately. Players should let their stacks of Legendary and Exotic fish build up until the next Fish Pond appears so that when they do pick up all their fish from the previous Fish Pond, the Focused Fishing will be enhanced. Each bar filled with Focused Fishing will enhance the odds of catching Legendary and Exotic fish.

Fish For The Vex Placoderm On Nessus

Destiny 2 Warlock Fishing on Planet Nessus Season of the Deep

Players are going to want to fly their ships over to Nessus and ignore Failsafe for this one. Once players arrive at Nessus, the best idea they can have is to Sparrow race over to The Cistern, near the Pools of Luminance. Once players locate the Fish Pond, it’s time to pull away from that itchy Vex-killing trigger finger, and enjoy a bout of fishing upon the radiolarian pools, or “Vex Milk”.

Players are looking for one fish in particular; an Exotic fish named “Vex Placoderm”. This Vex-infused fish is vital for the next step, where players will want to once again venture off to the H.E.L.M. Like always, fishing is RNG based, so players need to stay patient, and bring plenty of Bait if they are to get lucky enough to catch one of these Exotic fish to proceed with the quest ahead.

Fish For Aeonian Alpha-Betta In The EDZ

Destiny 2 Fishing Content

The third and final Exotic fish that players will need to start the new Exotic mission for the Wicked Implement Exotic weapon in Destiny 2 is the Aeonian Alpha-Betta. The Fish Pond that players want to access is at the Outskirts in the EDZ, and players will want to keep their fishing rod steady for the Aeonian Alpha-Betta.

It’s a waiting game at this point, and players will just have to keep plenty of bait on hand, and plenty of patience in their minds if they are to catch this Exotic fish. However, with this third and final fish, players can pick up their guns and resume the war with Xivu Arath.

Deposit 3 Exotic Fish At The HELM

After obtaining the Whispering Mothcarp fish, the Vex Placoderm, and the Aeonian Alpha-Betta, players will then need to put aside their fishing rod and venture through their destinations tab to enter the H.E.L.M. By the Sonar Station, players will find their Aquarium, where they will be able to deposit their fish like motes in PvPvE's Gambit.

10 Destiny 2 Weapons That Players Would Love To See Returning

Many Destiny 2 players would be delighted to see the following weapons make a grand return to Bungie's game.

After releasing all three Exotic fish into the deposit box, players will receive a random Exotic, along with the most important item to progress through the quest. Players will receive the Broken Blade of Strife for the Whispering Mothcarp, the Broken Blade of Ambition for handing in the Vex Placoderm, and finally the Broken Blade of Cunning for the Aeonian Alpha-Betta. These three fragmented legendary items will be used in the events to come. Players must have all three Broken Blades to progress through the Wicked Implement Exotic Quest.

Activate Statue 1: Broken Blade Of Strife

For the next step of the Destiny 2 Exotic quest, players will need to head into a Deep Dives activity. This can be done solo, with a Fireteam, or with three random players. It's advised to run the Deep Dive activity with a competent Fireteam that is all doing the Exotic quest, as there are further challenges that await.

Players should progress as normal, dropping down the hatch after receiving Ahsa’s Gift, and then opening the door to further descend into the Methane Sea of Titan. Players will want to head right as they come to the cluster of yellow coral, and right again, dropping down to find the first Hive Statue in the Deep Dives activity.

Here, players can offer the broken blade, and doing so will light up the Hive Statue with an orange flame. A small written text will appear saying “A bladed offering, accepted…” indicating that the story has not yet unfolded. Meanwhile, Xivu Arath will shout: “LET SPILL INTO THE SEAS OF TITAN, UNTIL THE TIDES RETREAT AT MY NAME.

Activate Statue 2: Broken Blade Of Ambition

After clearing out the Twilight area of the Deep Dive, and completing the first encounter of 1000 Meters in the Methane Sea, players can proceed with the quest. The next Hive statue is not located in the next section, but instead, in the same area as the Twilight mission room. Players can find this location by heading to Ahsa’s Gift, and then looking left. Running this way will see a wired floor, where players can jump up and locate a once-locked door.

Within this room lies the second Hive Statue of the Deep Dive activity. There is nothing else in this room other than the strangely placed Statue, identical to the first but in a different area. Players can offer the Broken Blade of Ambition to ignite the Hive Statue, and receive the text “A bladed offering, accepted…” Xivu Arath will then shout to confirm the completion of this step: “THE WHETSTONE AWAITS. BRING YOUR VIOLENCE LIKE A WAVE AGAINST MINE STONES.”

Activate Statue 3: Broken Blade Of Cunning

After the second Hive Statue has been given the Blade of Ambition, they will want to continue through the Deep Dive activity, starting from 1000 Meters in the Methane Sea, and heading further down. Once at 2000 Meters, players will want to head left, following the air bubbles and not falling to the bottom.

Keeping to the left, players will find the final Hive statue in the Deep Dive that will get them one step closer to claiming a new Exotic for their collection. Here, players can offer the final Broken Blade of Cunning, receiving the last “A bladed offering, accepted…” and another angry voice line from Xivu Arath that says “BLADED AND SCABBARD PART WAYS! BARE YOUR VIOLENCE UPON MINE ALTAR.

Complete The Midnight Area

At 2750 Meters in the Methane Sea, players will want to complete the activity in the Midnight area, but not venture through the normal route to continue the Deep Dive. Instead, they will want to head right, to where the once locked room is now open to all in the Fireteam. Here, all members of the Fireteam will need to interact with the two Hive Statues opposite each other and hold the interaction button to Carve a Path of Violence.

Jumping through the water gate next to these Hive Statues, players will proceed through the Wrathborn Sink area. It’s a long area, but there is only one way to go. As players progress, they will fight Khull, Executioner Knight, who is a Taken Knight boss who teleports away after hitting the damage threshold.

Players will then make it to The Drowning, a Restricted Zone that sees the architecture of the Darkness’ Pyramid ships return. Players need to make sure that they are stocked up on ammo, with their builds and supers at the ready, as the moment they proceed forward, they will begin the biggest challenge of this new Exotic Quest in Destiny 2: a timed mission.

Complete The Exotic Mission Within 10 Minutes

Once players enter The Drowning, they will face off against The Taken. From this starting point, players have ten minutes to clear the areas. It’s best to keep on top of the Taken that spawn and shoot the Pyramid structures to open doors. This is a Darkness Zone, so failure is not an option throughout this entire encounter, and players will see a timer on the left of the screen indicating that when it reaches 0, it's a wipe, and they will have to activate the Broken Blades again after returning to orbit.

In the first room, players will encounter Khull again, in a room filled with Taken Hobgoblins and other nasty sorts. Players will want to kill the Minotaur that appears to receive the Deathly Sharp buff, which only activates once they have x3. Players can earn this buff through killing Minotaurs, which are summoned through shooting the Darkness Crux. With Deadly Sharp x3, kill Khull and proceed forward, where players will find a rally banner spot for more heavy ammo and supers.

Destiny 2: How To Get The Wicked Implement Catalyst (& What It Does)

Wicked Implement is an Exotic scout rifle introduced during Season of the Deep. Here's how to get its Catalyst, and the upgrade it applies.

In the final room, players will need to kill Omen, Blade of the Black Terrace in the Tirtha Bind area, which is very much like a maze. Players need to seek out the “Honed” Taken enemies to get the Deathly Sharp buff to x3 to find and damage the boss. From here, they will have around a minute to damage the boss, who has rather frantic movements, and a lot of health, considering it’s a deadly Tormentor. Players are looking for Honed Minotaurs in this arena, and they can spawn in the four corners of the map, that being Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest from the rally banner spot. Players with courage and skill should be encouraged to split up here to each kill a Minotaur and save time to receive Deathly Sharp x3, and it's possible that players might need three to four damage phases.

Once defeated, players will want to run through the area and locate the Darkness statue, where they will Claim Power, and receive the Exotic Scout Rifle: Wicked Implement. This Exotic Scout Rifle is a Stasis Kinetic weapon that has the Creeping Attrition perk, allowing players to slow and freeze targets through rapidly landing precision hits.
