Anticipation for The Final Shape has continued to rise over the past two months, with each new trailer, developer deep dives, and blog posts providing new details on the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion.

Following a lengthy 25-hour maintenance window, the community's anticipation and excitement over The Final Shape's launch was largely deflated due to a shocking number of technical issues that prevented players from logging in once the update concluded. For many who were able to log in, the excitement was short-lived as server issues and disconnects interrupted Destiny 2 play sessions entirely. Things continued to spiral as the day continued, with Bungie's support team keeping fans informed, though errors and server instability continued to cause havoc for those attempting to play the newest campaign. In fact, the server issues even caused major problems for some players as they missed entire chunks of the story without realizing it.

While many were excited about experiencing The Final Shape's story, it quickly became apparent that the servers were causing critical cutscenes to be missed entirely. Influential members of the Destiny 2 community like Datto completely missed some of the cutscenes due to server instability, leading others to wonder why the story pacing felt off, not realizing that it was because critical story beats were omitted entirely. Bungie Responds and Apologizes for Destiny 2: The Final Shape Issues

The frustration felt by many in the community found its way back to Bungie, as the developer continued to work behind the scenes to alleviate these launch issues. The studio issued a lengthy post addressing community concerns, and providing a comprehensive timeline of the various issues and errors as they appeared. As for the cutscene problems, Bungie indicated that the best way to catch up, outside of viewing freshly uploaded cutscenes to YouTube, would be to replay the missions from Destiny 2's Pale Heart destination map. For reference, Bungie confirmed that custscenes are present at the end of Missions 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7, allowing players to better target the story beats they may have missed. Bungie wrapped the post by issuing an apology to fans, promising to continue working until the problems are resolved.

While the issues continue to get sorted out by Bungie, many in the community have wondered where Destiny 2 goes from here. As new Episodic content gets added over the upcoming year, fans have began theorizing about a potential third game in the franchise over comments made online from Bungie's executive creative director. When discussing and thanking the community, Luke Smith's post weirdly capitalized the word "Hope" three times, leading many to speculate about a potential Destiny 3 tease, though it could easily have been a misdirection from Smith as well.
