Bungie has announced that it is doing away with Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 to improve the in-game economy. This currency will start phasing out with the upcoming Season 23, and will be fully removed when Destiny 2's The Final Shape DLC launches.

Bungie has been actively making changes to Destiny 2’s economy for over a year in a bid to improve the new player experience. A major shift in this system kicked-off with the Witch Queen DLC, where Bungie announced the phasing out of Destiny 2’s planetary materials. Additionally, the ongoing Season 22 also saw some minor changes to the game’s economy, where players can now hold more Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Alloys, and the cap on Enhancement Prisms was also increased. Now, with the upcoming Season 23 and The Final Shape, Bungie is looking to tweak its in-game currencies even further.

This was revealed during the recent This Week in Destiny blog post, where Bungie mentioned that the gradual elimination of Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 will kick-off with Season 23. For starters, Bungie will remove the Legendary Shards cost from the Monument to Lost Lights, however, the other materials will still be needed to acquire Exotic weapons from the Monument. Additionally, Legendary Shards won’t be required for ritual gear focusing as well. Instead, focusing will now only cost glimmer and additional engrams, with only Trials of Osiris and Nightfall Adept weapons needing additional materials.

Legendary Shards have played a vital role in the game’s economy so far, where players usually have a few thousand Shards in their inventory at any given time. However, it isn’t the same for everyone as it is a common currency and can be exhausted quickly if not kept in check. To counter this, players have found several exploits and methods to farm Legendary Shards in Destiny 2, which Bungie has shut down almost instantly on all occasions. Consequently, Bungie wants to put an end to this imbalance for good, which is one of the biggest reasons it wants to completely remove this currency from the game.

Aside from this, Bungie has already announced some exciting plans for Destiny 2 Season 23 with PvP being a key focus area. For instance, Season 23 will get a new Iron Banner mode and also see the return of Citadel, a PvP map based in the Dreaming City.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
