The stage is set for a showdown in Destiny 2: The Final Shape roughly ten years in the making, a showdown which will take players inside the Traveler itself to confront the Witness and answer lingering questions from the last decade. The seemingly eternal conflict between the Witness and the Traveler has been at the heart of the Light and Darkness Saga, leading guardians to explore the depths of planets and battle godlike beings in defense of humanity. However, Bungie looks to push the community well beyond what the game's universe has shown to this point if they want to be victorious.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape will serve as the final expansion of the Light and Darkness Saga, which Bungie has described as only the first saga in the Destiny universe. Guardians will venture through the portal created by the Witness at the end of Lightfall to confront the dark being once and for all. The Final Shape will also see the return of Cayde-6, who will serve as guardians' guide to this strange world they will explore awaiting them on the other side of the portal.

Players got their first proper look at what awaits them in The Final Shape as part of the latest Destiny 2 Showcase, from the Witness' ultimate plan to some of the gear that can be brought to the fight. However, one of the biggest revelations from the showcase was that the expansion will take players inside the Traveler itself for this ultimate showdown with its ancient enemy. Bungie described the world awaiting inside the Traveler as a reflection of players' journey to this point, starting from the original Tower, that is now being twisted by the Witness as it works to achieve its final goal.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape's new location will reflect guardians' adventures in the universe.

Bungie also teased that the expansion's story will answer "questions of the grandest scale" as part of this ten-year culmination. While the team didn't go much further into detail about that some of these questions may be, players can easily speculate what these could be ranging from the Traveler's true origins to the role other races may play in the universe's future.

One thing Bungie did make clear during the showcase, though, was that the studio wants to deliver a conclusion to this ten-year story that it feels is satisfying while setting the stage for the universe's future. Players could argue, in turn, that this is why the inside of the Traveler will feature altered versions of previous locations such as the original Tower from Destiny. As to what other secrets and locations may be hidden away inside the Traveler, players will have to wait until February 2024 to see.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
