Bungie has confirmed that the last mission for Destiny 2: The Final Shape will not be available at launch, but will rather unlock after players have completed the DLC's raid. This was revealed in an interview by game director Joe Blackburn, who also revealed some more details about Destiny 2: The Final Shape and the future of PvP in the game.

The Final Shape expansion will be the last DLC in the game’s long-running Light and Darkness saga. After almost a decade of being introduced to the Traveler and the Darkness, the Witch Queen DLC finally revealed the Witness, the herald of Darkness who entered the Traveler at the end of Lightfall. Bungie also recently confirmed that the Guardians will be following them inside the Traveler, and that Destiny 2: The Final Shape’s campaign and raid will provide a climactic ending to the game’s story. However, there might be something more in store for the players who complete the final DLC’s raid.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Destiny 2’s game director, Joe Blackburn, hinted that there will be an additional mission which will unlock for players after they beat The Final Shape’s raid. Blackburn also mentioned that this mission’s format will be different from when the Guardians faced Savathun and Calus. He also explained that the team wanted the Witness to feel different from other characters in the game, where if they were to go 1v1 against the likes of Atheon or Riven, the Witness would always be the winner.

The Witness is an entity that is vastly different from other antagonists in the game as they are literally an amalgamation of an entire civilization. Bungie did explain the origins of the Witness in Destiny 2 Season of the Deep, but there is still much to learn about the character in terms of the extent of their powers, and their ultimate plan. Consequently, Bungie probably wants the game’s most complex and challenging boss yet to live up to their name and truly feel like a universe-ending threat.

Aside from this, the recent Destiny 2 showcase also revealed several other details about the upcoming DLC. For instance, three new super abilities are arriving with The Final Shape, along with a new enemy type called Subjugators. The game’s content delivery model will also change after The Final Shape, as Bungie will move to an episodic model for the post-launch content.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
