Bungie announced in a blog post this morning that it will be pushing back the release of their upcoming Shadowkeep Expansion for Destiny 2.
The expansion, which was due out September 17th, will now see its release on October 1st. It’s the first major expansion to Destiny 2 since Bungie broke away from Activition earlier this year. Alongside the announcement of the delay, Bungie also announced a new raid release date, a new Iron Banner, and an extension the Moments of Triumph event.
In the blog post, Bungie states that its fall releases “could use some more time in the oven” and cites their newfound independence as the reason the studio able to make these decisions. The blog post shows an awareness of their fan-base, apologizing for anyone who may have already planned to take the day off of work to play the game.
Bungie also announced a few other important dates for the game:
- The World First for the new Raid Garden of Salvation will begin on Saturday, October 5. It’s a weekend Raid race and Contest will be active
- We’re extending Moments of Triumph through September 17 – you’ll have three more weeks to complete this year’s challenges and unlock all of the in-game and Bungie rewards
- We’re going to run an additional Iron Banner the week of September 17 as well
- Cross Save will come online later this Summer, so you’ll have time to sort out your Friend Lists well ahead of Shadowkeep
While it seems Destiny 2 fans will have to wait a little longer for the new expansion, it can’t be overlooked the benefit Bungie has in making decisions like this without having to get permission from a publisher. If Shadowkeep can do as well for Bungie as Forsaken did last year, the developer should be just fine on its own.
The extension to Moments of Triumph and the extra Iron Banner seemed designed to soften the blow of the delay to fans. Bungie says that it will have more to say next week. Destiny 2 is also currently running its Solstice of Heroes event, so it seems there will be plenty to keep players busy while they wait for the upcoming expansion.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
