Highlights

  • Destiny 2's Season of the Witch and Diablo 4's Season of Blood share similarities in terms of themes and release dates, adding to the intrigue for players.
  • Despite some issues with recent expansions, the positive reception of Season of the Witch could help pave the way for Destiny 2's upcoming expansion, The Final Shape, just like Diablo 4's Season of Blood has a chance to improve upon the mistakes of its first season and thrive with its creepy themes
  • Destiny 2's Season of the Witch features Eris Morn, whereas Diablo 4's Season 2 adds a new character, Erys the vampire hunter. Both games are facing similar challenges and offering ways for players to confront them.

Destiny 2 is not exactly known for cheerful stories tackled by its seasons or expansions, with them often dealing with trauma, death, the consequences of loss and the toll it can take, and more themes as Guardians navigate the Sol System to fight the enemies of humanity. Similarly, Diablo 4's campaign and overall gritty aesthetic and dark themes are in line with what players have come to expect from the series. However, what is interesting is the connections that Destiny 2's Season of the Witch (which is currently live) and Diablo 4's upcoming Season of Blood share, with there being much more than meets the eye in both cases.

Diablo 4's Season of the Malignant didn't live up to expectations due to patch notes that mainly comprised nerfs to all the classes, disappointing or simply uninteresting seasonal activities that fell out of the loop quickly, and a general sense that there weren't many differences with the base game's offering. Still, Season of Blood is coming out on October 17, and so far it seems that Blizzard is making good choices with it if one has to go by the reveal trailer at Gamescom. Oddly enough, Destiny 2's Season of the Witch and Diablo 4's Season of Blood will not only overlap in terms of dates for at least a month, but they also share other similarities.

Destiny 2's Season of the Witch and Diablo 4's Season of Blood Share Multiple Similarities

A Destiny 2 player notices an eerie similarity between Eris Morn and Savathun within the new seasonal space.

Despite Destiny 2's Season of the Deep solving some Lightfall issues with its consistent lore drops, morale among players is not yet on the rise after the problematic launch of the latest expansion. Still, Season of the Witch offers new content and a more diverse experience thanks to Destiny 2's new deckbuilding mechanics, and the new storyline focusing on the Hive transformations of Eris Morn also has its merits in the overarching plot.

So far, the reception of Season of the Witch seems way above average, and that could help with the upcoming launch of Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion in February of next year. Likewise, Diablo 4's Season of Blood has a chance to right many of the wrongs that came to be with its first season, which could help the game thrive ahead of its already planned expansions. Oddly enough, Diablo 4's second season features a character with a similar name to Destiny 2's iconic Eris Morn, this time a vampire hunter named Erys, who will help players deal with the many vampires of Season of Blood.

This is most likely a coincidence, but it's interesting that both characters would use the Greek name Eris, which means "strife" and was the name of the goddess of discord - the one who, according to mythology, would go on to inadvertently start the Trojan War. Furthermore, it's worth noting that both seasons share particularly creepy themes, and both are slated to be active around the Halloween period - with Destiny 2's Festival of the Lost event also taking place in Season of the Witch. Although the games are quite different from one another, they are currently facing similar challenges and adding similar content or ways to face those very challenges.

While it's too soon to determine whether Diablo 4's Season of Blood is going to be successful, the premise is not only enticing, but it seems that Blizzard has learned a valuable lesson from its Season 1 debacle. At the same time, Destiny 2's Season of the Witch's initial success could finally cement a new beginning for the Lightfall era if Season 23 proves to be as impactful as players want it to be ahead of The Final Shape.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
