Bungie's latest showcase stream wasn't shy about sharing some of the big plans the studio has for Destiny 2 over the next year, all built around the game's next major expansion, Lightfall. The new expansion alone will bring with it a new destination to explore with Neptune's captial city Neomuna, Calus' new Shadow Legion, and new abilities for guardians to play with. Before players get there, though, they will get the chance to channel their inner-pirate alongside Mithrax and the Drifter in the newest season, Season of Plunder.

The studio took a deep dive into the new season during its latest showcase stream, confirming leaks about the return of Eramis to Destiny 2 and the overall pirate motif. Guardians will join Mithrax, Drifter, Eido, and Spider as they form a new crew to combat the forces Eramis is gathering after escaping the Stasis shell she has been frozen in since the end of Beyond Light's campaign. She will join forces with Eliksni pirate lords in an effort to rally her efforts against the Traveler and the Last City, though it is not known what role the Witness may have played in this.

As for the activities on hand, there will be three central to the season's overall gameplay loop. First is Ketchcrash, the new six-player matchmade activity where guardians will engage in ship-to-ship battles and board Eramis the Shipstealer's Ketches to halt her crew's raiding efforts. Expedition is a new three-player activity described as having players "assemble treasure maps, dig for treasure" and take it back to their crew's Ketch before Eramis' crew does. Third are Pirate Hideouts, weekly story missions pitting players against Eramis' pirate lords in a battle for plunder.

There looks to be plenty of gear and weapons for players to grind for, too, which also fit in with the pirate aesthetic. The seasonal weapons and ornaments take clear inspiration from both the Eliksni crews guardians are fighting alongside and against, and weapons from humanity's own golden age of piracy.

However, veteran players may be most excited to see return is the King's Fall raid to relive the titular end of Oryx the Taken King. Bungie confirmed the reprised world first's race will kick off at daily reset on Friday, August 26, leaving only three days for guardians to prepare for their incursion into the Dreadnaught. It is not clear, though, how much of the raid has been changed to fit in with Destiny 2's current landscape, instead likely leaving those discoveries to players.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
