The weeks following Lightfall's release have already seen many players share theories about where Destiny 2 is heading, with one content creator in particular suggesting the new raid, Root of Nightmares, may be pointing directly to where The Final Shape leads. Despite the general disappointment with Lightfall's campaign among players, the expansion has given players a treasure trove of lore to dig through to formulate theories about how the Light and Darkness Saga may end. Lore-driven content creators have been among the most active in sharing these theories, and the latest theory about The Final Shape's direction comes from one of the most popular in that space.

MyNameIsByf is one of the more prolific Destiny 2 content creators active, with most of his content dedicated to examining the wealth of lore Bungie has crafted for the game over the years. He originally began as a Halo YouTuber who highlighted some of the most popular maps created by the game's community using the series' popular Forge tools. Byf transitioned into Destiny content with the release of the original game's alpha in 2014, officially crossing the one million subscriber mark shortly before this writing.

Like other Destiny 2 lore content creators, Byf has been looking into Destiny 2's Lightfall lore for Nezarec and the Root of Nightmares raid for clues on how it affects the larger universe. His latest video continued this trend, though he chooses to focus on a very specific symbol visible to players for most of the raid. This symbol is at the center of Byf's theory, which suggests that its placement — pointing directly at the portal created by The Witness on The Traveler itself — hints that this is where players will be going in The Final Shape.

The portal on The Traveler was created at the end of Lightfall's campaign after The Witness was able to link with The Veil under Neomuna by momentarily taking control of players' Ghosts to do so. While players still don't know where The Witness is, there are already hints that this portal will play a key role within Destiny 2's upcoming expansion The Final Shape as players look to defeat The Witness once and for all. Byf's own theory takes it a step further, though, by suggesting The Traveler knew the fate it would suffer and pointed players in the literal direction they needed to stop The Witness.

While it will likely be some time before players learn if Byf's theory is correct, it does highlight how deep the lore in Lightfall and Season of Defiance in Destiny 2 is proving to be. Root of Nightmares, in particular, has been full of lore to discover about Nezerac, suggesting the team wanted to deliver on roughly six years of build up after the disciple was first mentioned in the Nezarec's Sin exotic warlock helmet. If some of the supposed story leaks from shortly before and after Lightfall's release also turn out to be true, Bungie will have set the stage for an epic encounter worthy of closing out this particular saga.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
