Table of contents

Since raids are intended to be the pinnacle of endgame content (excluding Grandmaster Nightfalls) in Destiny 2, there is a whole table worth of loot that is completely unique to them. From armor to weapons, there is a bunch of loot that can be found anywhere else.

Players are always at the mercy of what drops they get due to the random nature of the game. So as players farm raids, one effective method for having another shot at getting a better roll on a weapon or better stats on armor is to open hidden chests throughout the raid. Here is where Destiny 2 players can find the hidden chests in Root of Nightmares.

Where to Find the Hidden Chests

Before going into where the chests can be found, there is one important detail that players should know about hidden chests in raids. Excluding the chests that can be reached via the Wall of Wishes in the Last Wish, chests in raids will only drop loot that players have already obtained in the raid. Using Root of Nightmares as an example, if a player only obtained Rufus's Fury, a pair of boots, and their class item so far, those will be the only items that will drop from the chests. That said, raid mods and Spoils of Conquest will still drop regardless of if players have gotten any loot from the raid before or not.

The first chest can be found while going to the second encounter. Run up and along the white tendril platforms. Look up toward the right to see an alcove that leads into another room. Follow the hallway, take a right, and go down the stairs. In the room ahead is a group of enemies and a Tormentor. Kill them and go up the stairs to reach the first chest which is in front of one of those enigmatic statues that have been showing up since Shadowkeep.

The second hidden chest can be found during the puzzle section between the second and third encounter. Near the door that leads out of the puzzle area and toward the third encounter is a lower platform with a floating switch device that can be shot. Upon shooting it, turn around, go up the stairs, and enter a temple type of structure. The chest will be in the middle of this room between a light and dark plate.

Is There a Reward for Finding All the Chests?

For many raids released over the past few years in Destiny 2, there has been a Triumph for finding all the hidden chests. In some cases, the Triumph also rewards players with a unique shader that can only be obtained from the raid. Players who get all chests in Root of Nightmares get the Oxidized Lead shader.

Destiny 2 is available now on Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
