Destiny 2: Characters That Could Die In The Final Shape

The stakes have never been higher than in Destiny 2's last expansion, The Final Shape and some fan-favorite characters could end up being killed.

Guardians always use their Ghosts, whether it’s conversing, checking their bounties, or hacking open an infinite amount of doors. Yet, despite the importance of the Ghost, there are some of the rarest Ghost Shells in Destiny 2 that players might not be able to obtain anymore, either through vaulted content or a difficulty scale.

Updated on May 13, 2024, by Jake Fillery: Ghost Shells and Guardians go hand-in-hand, so it's no surprise that some Guardians want to treat the best Destiny 2 ghost shells in some sweet and rare fashion. Having a decent ghost shell is just as important as having a decent set of armor, as fashion truly plays a large part in Destiny 2, to the point where some might seek out the nicest cosmetics, or others, the rarest. Luckily for those who prefer the latter, this list compiles some of the rarest ghost shells in Destiny 2, so that players can see if they have a chance to claim any more of this content before it could potentially be sunset for good as The Final Shape arrives ever closer on June 4, 2024.

14 Ugly Little Spud Shell

Purchased From The Eververse Store For 800 Silver

Ugly Little Spud Shell

In a collab with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Destiny 2 brought new cosmetics to the Eververse. Starting with the Ugly Little Spud Shell, fans of the Ghostbusters franchise might instantly recognize Slimer, making a grotesque appearance in Bungie's sci-fi game, except, as a hand-crafted shell made of paper and cardboard, instead of ectoplasm.

This ghost shell isn't the rarest to acquire, as anyone can jump into the Eververse store and purchase it with real currency in the form of Silver. However, that doesn't mean everyone has. The fact that it looks handcrafted, and that some players might not care for Ghostbusters, could easily leave this shell a forgotten relic when The Final Shape arrives.

13 Heimdall Shell

Purchased In The Gjallarheart Gear Bundle For 2,500 Silver

Heimdall Shell

Guardians love Gjallahorn, the classic exotic that's been around since the early days of Destiny. This rocket launcher is often championed in and out of the games, and as such, it's time to celebrate its importance with a shell designed after the exotic, the Heimdall Shell.

Despite the love for Gjallahorn, not everyone loves it enough to spend 2,500 Silver just to receive a ghost shell as part of the package from the Eververse store. That's the only way to claim this shell, which could easily set players back a real-life amount of around $30.

12 The Final Shell

Pre-Order Bonus For The Final Shape

The Final Shell

Whilst it might not seem a hard task to acquire, The Final Shell does come with a promise of rarity, as when The Final Shape comes out on June 4, the shell will disappear for those who did not pre-order the potential last expansion. With reportedly low pre-order numbers, not many players might have claimed this shell before it's gone forever.

Destiny 2: Strongest Raid Bosses, Ranked In Terms of Lore

Destiny 2's best raid bosses have some incredible strengths that are only truly displayed in the lore, begging the question of who is the strongest.

It's definitely a decent shell, as it depicts the infamous moment in Lightfall where the Traveler was surrounded by pyramid ships, and now, players can recreate that dreaded moment that stole the Light from them, as a quirky ghost shell. It's rather creepy too, as this is a rare shell in which the ghost's eye is completely black and void of life.

11 Scribetrace Shell

Acquire All 3 Vexcalibur Catalysts

Scribetrace Shell

One of the more peculiar ghost shells in Destiny 2, the Scribetrace Shell asks for more than just an Eververse purchase or a pre-order of a new expansion, as it entirely relies on player skill. The Scribetrace Shell can be acquired by those who have Season of Defiance, and all who have purchased this season may enter the exotic NODE.OVRD.AVALON mission.

Within this mission, players will need to complete it multiple times on Legend difficulty if they are to acquire each and every catalyst for the Vexcalibur. Only then, will they be able to hand in the Firmware Update triumph, which will see them claim this Vex-style ghost shell.

10 Contender’s Shell

Complete The Leviathan Raid (Sunset Content)

Contender’s Shell

Although there is nothing inherently special about the Contender’s Shell in its design, for it looks like a Ghost Shell trapped in a car's airbag, it’s still a rather rare item that players simply cannot obtain any more. The Contender’s Shell is locked, vaulted away, and sunset until Bungie decides to allow it to see its time in the sun once more.

To get the Contender’s Shell, players needed to complete the Leviathan Raid. This random loot drop would see players obtain this special Ghost Shell, but since there is no way to access any of the raids on the Leviathan, it’s safe to say that this will remain a rare Ghost Shell, at least for now.

9 Guardian Games Shell

Play During The Annual Guardian Games Event

Guardian Games Shell

Every year, Commander Zavala initiates the opening of the Guardian Games, a friendly competition between the three Guardian classes, Warlocks, Titans, and Hunters. In every Guardian Games, each class will fight through PvE or PvP content to bank medallions and make their team the winner for the entire year. To better represent each Guardian class, the Vanguard issued the Guardian Games Ghost Shell.

Each Guardian could obtain a Ghost Shell that had a red lion for Titans, a blue snake for Hunters, and a yellow bird for Warlocks. What makes these Shells rare is that players need to be active during the Guardian Games, which comes once a year, and perhaps now will be celebrated by Eliksni refuges.

8 Vantastic Shell

A Random Eververse Item, Last Seen With Bungie's 30th Anniversary

Vantastic Shell

One of the silliest Ghost Shells in Destiny 2, the Vantastic Shell provides the adorable Ghost with a car to drive around in. This Shell is great for those who enjoy a wood paneling car, and it was part of a celebration of Bungie’s 30th Anniversary, which saw players face off against Xur and the cosmic Star Horse’s oddities in the Dares of Eternity.

However, the Vantastic Shell remained in the Eververse store, and despite its introduction in Season 15, it has yet to return, perhaps remaining forever trapped within this season as a 30th Anniversary celebration, meaning players might not ever get their hands on this Ghost that hopefully has a driving license.

7 Empathic Shell

Promotional Item For Donating To The iPads For Kids Bungie Program

Empathic Shell

Another rare ghost Shell in Destiny 2 is the Empathic Shell. This adoring Shell features an inflated balloon in the shape of a heart, with even the eye of the Ghost changing to that of a red heart rather than its usual blue eye. This Ghost Shell goes to a good cause in real life, as purchasing this Shell will benefit the iPads for Kids program.

The reason this Ghost Shell may be rare is due to the price tag attached to it. The price of the Ghost Shell goes to a great cause, but some players may not be able to afford the donation, thus leaving this beautiful Exotic Ghost in the hands of players that can give.

6 Imperious Sun Shell

Find All Vow Of The Disciple Lore Books

Imperious Sun Shell

The Imperious Sun Shell is rare for several reasons, but it should be considered a sought-after prize due to the lore implications within. For this Ghost Shell, it is the first time players get to see the Traveler speak. The Traveler speaks to Rhulk through this Ghost Shell thanks to a lore tab, and it may disappoint players to know that they can only read this interaction rather than hear it for themselves.

However, to obtain the Imperious Sun Shell, players need to unlock all Vow of the Disciple lore books, which can only be done from within the Raid, and alongside other Guardians. It may be hard to find a team to complete this secret challenge in Destiny 2, but it’s worth the visual prize.

5 Armory Forged Shell

Complete The Black Armory's Niobe's Torment Quest (Now Sunset)

Collage Maker-17-Jul-2023-04-00-PM-8255

The Black Armory was a strange time for Destiny 2 players. Content seemed to be slowly appearing, and the mysteries of the Black Armory would unravel in the hands of players. One such reward for this set of missions was the Armory Forged Shell, which could be obtained by completing the Quest, Niobe’s Torment.

Some of the rarest emblems in Destiny 2 are sure to bring out the uniqueness in every player that has one.

This Exotic Ghost Shell is rather interesting for its sharp design, and its branding of creation from the Black Armory. It’s a neat Ghost Shell that not many players will have, as it Destiny Content Vault that can no longer be accessed, with no way of knowing if it will ever see the sun again.

4 Knight’s Peace Shell

Go Flawless In Trials Of The Nine Within The Warmind DLC Era

Knight’s Peace Shell

Trials of the Nine later rebranded back to Trials of Osiris, is of extreme difficulty. 4 Guardians would battle it out against 4 more Guardians to claim who is the top team. Players had to give it their all, and upon going Flawless, they would be gifted with unimaginable rewards in terms of power and exclusivity, as there was no other way to obtain Flawless loot.

One such reward came from a Flawless win within the Warmind DLC, in which players would receive the Knight’s Peace Shell. This unique Ghost Shell is unlike the rest, as it seems more exposed, featuring the core of the Ghost outside of its shell. It’s a great design, and rare to see due to the time it came out, and the difficulty of obtaining it.

3 Sagira’s Shell

Complete The Curse Of Osiris Campaign (Now Sunset)

sagira's shell

Sagira, the Ghost to Osiris. Sagira and Osiris traveled across time itself together for decades, until her fateful demise. Before this tragedy, players could obtain Sagira’s Shell to replicate the fan-favorite Ghost Shell, and her famous Warlock Guardian by completing all of Brother Vance’s ranks in the Curse of Osiris expansion.

Once again, this is yet another Ghost Shell that has fallen to the calamity of Bungie vaulting content, and as such, Sagira’s Shell remains lost in the sands of time, waiting for Bungie to unleash the content vault so players can honor the now fallen Ghost with her Shell.

2 Hareball Shell

Complete The Prophecy Dungeon Without A Fireteam

Hareball Shell

Completing a Dungeon is no small task, and players will need to head into the unknown of these puzzling and dangerous encounters if they are to reap the rewards available to them. However, if players want to get their hands on the adorable Hareball Shell, which will make the Ghost look like that of a rabbit, then they fight with their hands.

Players will need to complete the Prophecy dungeon solo to claim this Shell. Luckily, it does not have to be a solo flawless, and players will simply need to complete it without a Fireteam to obtain this shell. It can be difficult, so remain patient, and the Hareball Shell will belong to those who want it most.

1 Last City Shell (Damaged)

Acquired Through The (Now Sunset) Red War Campaign

Last City Shell (Damaged)

The Last City Shell (Damaged) is perhaps the most unique Shell. It’s a common rarity Ghost Shell, but by no means does that mean everyone has it. The specialty of this Ghost Shell comes from the fact that it cowers and struggles to remain afloat. Its beaten design comes from the damages obtained during the Red War.

It was never hard to obtain the Last City Shell (Damaged), as all players had to do was complete the first mission during the Red War campaign. This iconic Ghost Shell would remain in the inventory of the player, and they could, and still can, equip it at any time. What makes it a rare Ghost Shell is how many players would not have played through the Red War expansion, thus leaving the Last City Shell (Damaged) in the hands of true veterans.
