Now that the newest raid in Destiny 2 has been out for a few weeks now, Bungie has unlocked both the Master difficulty and challenges for each version of Root of Nightmares. For players looking to challenge themselves, Master difficulty raids are intended to be for the best of the best. Each encounter proves to be more difficult than the normal version of the raid.

While only one challenge is currently in the game, more will be added each week. In the meantime, this guide will show Destiny 2 players how to complete Master Root of Nightmares and go over what has changed in every single encounter.

How to Start Master Root of Nightmares

Now that Master Root of Nightmares is available in Destiny 2, players can start it by navigating to the Root of Nightmares node on Neptune in the in-game director. There, players will see Master listed beneath the default Normal difficulty.

For Master difficulty, the highest effective Power level is 1820. Unlike Normal, there are several active modifiers that will make the experience more difficult. There will be more Champions (both Unstoppable and Barrier), and more enemies will have shields. Beyond that, there is also several surges active that boost both Solar and Strand damage by 25%. Overcharged Weapon modifiers are active as well.

Differences in Encounters

For the first encounter, Destiny 2 players will need to activate nodes and kill Tormentors to extend the time left on the Sweeping Terror debuff. Aside from more Cabal enemies having shields, the main thing that players will need to watch out for in the first encounter is the extra Champions that spawn. If not handled correctly, Champions can quickly kill players and make it difficult to activate nodes and kill Tormentors quick enough to prevent a wipe.

For the second encounter, the mechanics are unchanged. Players will need to activate all light and dark nodes scattered across both sides of the arena. The big change for Master difficulty is that Barrier Champions now spawn with an Unstoppable Champion as well.

For the third encounter, players will still need to move planets to either light or dark like in Normal. The main difference is that the Colossus that spawn at the start are now Barrier Champions. As with previous encounters on Master difficulty, players should be prepared to see more enemies with shields.

For the fourth and final encounter, there isn't much that has changed with Nezarec. Just like with the third encounter, the Colossus enemies that spawn will also be Barrier Champions.

Is There Any Unique Loot for Master Difficulty?

The big reason to do a raid on higher difficulty is better, unique loot. If players complete Root of Nightmares on Master difficulty, they will get an Exotic ship. Once all challenges are available, players can also get a unique Exotic sparrow as well. Completing challenges on Master difficulty will also reward players with a guaranteed Adept version of a rotating weekly weapon. For the first week, players can get an Adept version of Mykel's Reverence (Strand Sidearm).

Destiny 2 is available now on Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
