Destiny 2 is in a bit of a weird spot right now for various reasons, with one of the biggest pain points within the community being the maintenance times and how often the servers are down compared to a few months ago, to the point that "Destiny 3" is often trending on socials following these issues. Still, there is a lot of hype surrounding Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion, and Season of the Deep is also enjoying its time in the limelight following a fantastic Dungeon release and an interesting set of seasonal activities that range from roguelike-adjacent to fishing mini-games. There are a lot of changes coming to the game in the near future, too, and a big one regarding Destiny 2 updates occurred last week.
So far, Destiny 2's regular updates would come on any week's Thursday, and they came in the form of blog posts on Bungie's own website called "This Week at Bungie", or "TWAB" for short. TWABs have been an integral part of Destiny 2's development process, and they've always been the transparency posts that Bungie shared, with everything from details of upcoming releases to comments on why some changes are tackled in a certain way. However, since last Thursday, TWAB posts were changed to "This Week in Destiny", or "TWID" for short, and the difference proves just how impactful Bungie's Marathon will be in the future.
How Destiny 2's TWAB Posts' Name Change Impacts Marathon's Future
It's been a while since Sony acquired Bungie, and it was expected that at some point the company would make an announcement about its new non-Destiny 2 projects - one of them being the long-discussed "Matter." During the PlayStation Showcase of May 24, Bungie unveiled its first all-new upcoming game, which will be a reboot of its long-time series called Marathon. The new game is going to be an extraction-based shooter focused on PvP gameplay, but not much else is currently known about its intended loop or its release date.
As it stands, it's quite likely that Marathon won't make another public appearance before another full year, as the game is still in development, and it would make sense for Bungie to play it safe with its first new IP in almost a decade. However, occasional updates are still probably coming further down the line before any further major event showcase, and it's only natural for these to be shared on the official Bungie website. This explains the TWAB change for Destiny 2, making it likely that players will see a "This Week in Marathon" post at some point.
While the TWAB name change doesn't mean things will look entirely different for Destiny 2, it is the sign of a new upcoming era for Bungie, one that could see more meaningful updates for the studio that are not exclusively about its space magic looter-shooter. On the other hand, TWABs have spawned their own legacy of memes and even community creations to help players keep track of news, and the new TWID has a lot riding on its shoulders already.
With Marathon taking center stage in the near future, it could mean having two dedicated days per week with news regarding the new IP and Destiny 2. And, considering Bungie's plans to have multiple new IPs out in the coming years, this could become a new constant to look forward to, but hopefully, not one that eventually replaces Destiny 2 updates altogether for a week or two at a time. Destiny 2's Season 22 will come in a couple of months, and alongside it, players will also see a glimpse of The Final Shape ahead of its 2024 launch, and all of this will likely be a test bench for Bungie's new era.
