How to Get Malfeasance in 2023

Previously, players had to own the Forsaken expansion in order to get Malfeasance. Now, anyone can grab the gun regardless of expansion pack ownership. There are several steps to complete in the quest to get Malfeasance, and most of them involve running activities in the Dreaming City or Gambit.

Step 1: The Seething Heart

The first part will have players playing and winning a Gambit match to get a Seething Heart, a quest item that must then be brought to the Drifter back at the Tower. Giving the item to him will unlock the next step of the quest chain. If players aren't getting the Seething Heart, then they might need to take down the Ascendant Primeval Servitor, which resembles a giant, flying meatball. This Primeval has a random chance of spawning.

Step 2: City of Secrets

The next part involves slaying 25 Taken bosses or minibosses. A lot of them can be found in the Dreaming City — particularly, the Taken Public Events that spawn randomly throughout the area. An alternative to this is to run The Corrupted Strike repeatedly until players meet the 25-kill quota. Th quest can take a lot of time, so players will need to be patient.

Step 3 & 4: The Corrupted (Mission Variant)

Next, players must finish a special mission variant of The Corrupted Strike, which involves a different set of objectives and a new story. Here, the Drifter will ask players to investigate what happened to a missing Guardian. Proceed through the mission and beat the final boss to finish the quest step. Then, return to the Drifter and hand over the Depleted Weapon Core.

Step 5: Business As Usual

For this quest step, players will need to return to Gambit to win matches and deposit motes. There is a catch, however. If a player drops motes by dying, they lose progress for the deposit motes part of the quest. Much like the Chaperone exotic quest, players will need to play carefully to ensure that they don't lose progress. It may be better to steadily deposit five motes rather than wait to bank 15 at a time.

Step 6: Lights Out

This step of the quest is a bit tricky and revolves around invading during a Gambit match. Players will need to defeat 25 guardians as an invader, not like the Cayde’s Will quest, which requires players to kill invaders. On top of that, players will need to (as a fireteam) kill four members of the opposing team three times. The wording of this suggests that either the player or one of the player’s teammates can invade and get the quadruple kill.

Once that step is complete, players can speak to The Drifter as the final step of the quest chain and be awarded the Malfeasance Hand Cannon. This exotic creates an explosion if players shoot the same target multiple times. It also deals bonus damage to Taken enemies or invading Guardians in Gambit. While it’s not clear if this gun will outclass the other exotics introduced in Forsaken, it sure does have an awesome design.
