Destiny 2's latest expansion, Lightfall, has introduced a kind of enemy that players have grown fond of. These enemies, called Tormentors, are entities created through the powers of both Emperor Calus and The Witness, and commanded by the latter. Tormentors are some of the most imposing warriors players have ever faced in Destiny 2, especially on harder difficulties. The enemy's unique mechanics, tanky bodies, fearsome attacks, and deceptive agility, make them memorable to fight against.

Tormentors' design in Destiny 2 is sleek and simultaneously powerful, separating them from the reused visual nature of Champions and Hive Lightbearers. Unlike many of Destiny 2's other re-skinned baddies, Tormentors have completely unique designs with layers of winding cloth overtop large torsos and long spindly limbs. In lieu of a normal head with humanoid features, Tormentors feature a neck that's adorned with a pyramid-like cap that glows ominously as the creature is damaged.

Lightfall's Tormentors Have Abilities That Match Their Striking Looks

While they may look frightening on their own, their Scythe is equally scary and helps the Tormentor channel the power of the Void to cast projectiles at Guardians in between slams that suppress anything nearby. Luckily for Guardians, Tormentors have weak spots on their bodies, similar to Destiny 2's Vow of The Disciple's Raid boss, Rhulk. Tormentors also possess an ability called "Dark Harvest," where they use their scythe to grab a Guardian before using their Void power on their now helpless victim. This ability doesn't always down a Guardian unless they are low on health to begin with, which can be likely when up against a Tormentor and other adds.

Many players like how unique it feels to play against Tormentors. Unlike many other enemies in Destiny 2, Tormentors require players to fight differently in ways they may not be used to regarding how aggressive Tormentors can be. Case in point, Tormentors heavily resist non-precision damage, meaning players must focus on the Tormentor's weak spots, one at a time. Because of its defenses, using Supers or Heavy weapons like rocket launchers or grenade launchers is not nearly as effective as Kinetic or Energy precision weapons. This makes Tormentor encounters in Destiny 2 more challenging and rewards fast and accurate aim while trying to keep distance from them.

Tormentors Should Be Included in More of Destiny 2's Modes

Given how interesting the concept of Tormentors is in Destiny 2's landscape, more enemies that similarly resist non-precision damage or that have weak points should be added further down the line. When mixed in with other enemies with varying attacks, Tormentors truly shine by exuding constant pressure within any encounter, especially thanks to their ability to suppress Guardians. While it's a shame that The Witch Queen's Hive Lightbearers weren't included in more PvE content, Bungie could still sprinkle Tormentors into more of Destiny 2's game modes in the future.

Tormentors are an excellent addition to Destiny 2's roster of enemies. Their imposing design, engaging Void-based powers, and unique resistances make them stand out from other enemy encounters and provide players with a new and difficult challenge. With introducing Tormentors, it's clear that Bungie knows how to make interesting units to fight against, and players eagerly anticipate what else they might make in the future. Hopefully, Bungie can continue to innovate and bring its playerbase new enemy encounters that require players to pivot how they play as they do with Tormentors.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
