The Illuminated Torment Challenge

Destiny 2- Root of Nightmares Cataclysm Fight

To complete the Illuminated Torment challenge, players can only defeat Tormentors while they have the Field of Light buff. Luckily, there are several ways to complete this challenge efficiently.

Planting The Seeds

First and foremost, players should decide on one person to run and plant the seeds as one normally would for the encounter while the rest are on enemy control. To ensure the team doesn't fail from the wipe mechanic, enemy control players should watch for two Psions that spawn in various areas, and defeating both Psions will trigger a Tormentor to appear.

Killing a Tormentor increases the countdown timer by thirty seconds, giving the runner plenty of time to plant the seeds to complete the encounter. Usually, the enemy control players would all group up and defeat the Tormentor together. However, to complete the Illuminated Torment challenge, the player can only beat the Tormentor while having the Field of Light buff. So what's the best way to get the buff?

Completing The Challenge

There are two methods players can use to complete the challenge efficiently. The first would be to have all the enemy-control players wither the Tormentor down until it has a small amount of health remaining. Afterward, the runner, who always has the Field of Light buff, will quickly deal the finishing blow as they travel around the area. This saves the hassle of having the enemy control players acquire the buff to ensure the Tormentor is defeated. However, this gives extra work to the runner, which is not a superb option if they aren't experienced.

Thus, the second option would have all the enemy control players meet up with the runner when they acquire the Field of Light buff, allowing everyone to deal the finishing blow to the Tormentor. Having everyone gather to get the buff is a little tedious, but this method will ensure that anyone can deal with the Tormentor without worrying about failing the challenge.

Master Difficulty Changes

For players attempting to complete the challenge on Master difficulty, one key difference from the Normal difficulty is the presence of Unstoppable Champions. Thus, enemy control players must deal with Tormentors, Anti-Barrier Champions, and now Unstoppable Champions. Needless to say, the encounter is very chaotic. However, given how powerful Guardians are nowadays, completing the Illuminated Torment challenge with the right builds should be manageable for most players.

Completing the challenge will reward Guardians with the exclusive Adept version of the Mykel's Reverence Sidearm.

Destiny 2 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
