Destiny 2's The Witch Queen is a few days away, and the expansion will bring much-needed changes to old systems of the game and brand-new things to look forward to, such as the rebalancing of Void subclasses and weapon crafting. Among the things that are changing, Bungie announced a while back that Gambit would take a pass before Season 16 and The Witch Queen launched, but not a complete overhaul to change it from the ground up. The idea was to make Gambit more akin to the current state of Trials of Osiris, and today's TWAB solidifies that image.

Bungie details all the changes that Gambit is getting with Destiny 2's upcoming update, starting from the premises for why some aspects were reworked and expectations. For starters, Gambit will now get a Freelance node that will allow players to join the queue completely solo and avoid stacks of four, much like Trials of Osiris. Another significant change is that players will only drop half their Motes on death, but they can be picked up by anyone - including invaders. Bungie also encourages team play by making revives more timely, which is good.

One of the notions about the Gambit rework is that the activity should escalate in difficulty when invaders or the Primeval are present, and killing them should feel like beating a hard Nightfall. This translates into shields being harder to break with non-matching weapons, some Blockers being harder to kill or getting a new attack, and the Primeval itself being much more challenging than before. Melting the boss is not what a ritual Destiny 2 activity should be all about, especially when PvP elements are thrown into the mix. As such, defeating the Primeval will become easier the more Envoy waves are deleted.

Something many Destiny 2 players will notice is that invasion thresholds will change, scaling down from three to two, and only occurring at 40 and 80 Motes deposited in the bank, drastically changing the way Gambit should be played. Another important note is that invasion portals can no longer be stored indefinitely. Ammo economy is also a big point in the TWAB, with the ultimate goal on Bungie's part to make it so obtaining Special and Heavy ammo is more balanced and streamlined both with brick drops and ammo chests from clearing Fronts.

Although Bungie had set expectations for Destiny 2's Gambit rework relatively low, the changes proposed in the TWAB can make this game ode much more enjoyable across the board. It didn't take a lot to fix Trials of Osiris, and the rework for Gambit looks promising, especially because Bungie is also making Drifter have a way to focus rewards.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
