Highlights

  • Fireteam Power in Destiny 2 allows under-leveled players to participate in endgame content without grinding for Power Levels, benefiting both new and veteran players.
  • The feature raises players' Power Level near the highest player present, improving resistance and damage output.
  • While the list of activities for Fireteam Power is limited, it is expected to expand with future content, increasing accessibility to low-level players and providing more freedom in gear choice.

The Fireteam Power feature coming to Destiny 2 will allow players who are currently under-leveled to participate in the game’s endgame content without having to first grind for Power Levels. Players that are part of a team in the specific activities in Destiny 2 where this feature is enabled will have their Power Level raised near to the level of the highest player present. While the feature is particularly helpful for newer players, it will also provide benefits to veteran players.

Power levels in Destiny 2 are the game’s measurement of how strong a player is, determined by the average of the Power Level on each piece of their gear. Without being at the proper Power Level for particular activities in Destiny 2, players will have poor resistance to incoming damage and minuscule outgoing damage. It can take multiple weeks to reach the maximum Power Level in Destiny 2, so features like Fireteam Power are a welcome addition in any capacity. With more features dedicated to multiplayer and the new player experience coming to the game, Destiny 2 will soon have plenty of new elements that encourage and enable team play.

Fireteam Power Is a Game-Changer for Destiny 2

Bungie outlines the rewards waiting for Destiny 2 players in The Witch Queen's legendary campaign.

The list of activities that Destiny 2 Fireteam Power applies to is rather limited for now, but it is likely to expand and include additional activities from future content in the game. It’s also worth noting that certain activities already have their own Power Level scaling, so even without Fireteam Power, these activities are still approachable for low-level players. Activities in Destiny 2 that will include Fireteam Power scaling include:

Some of the casual and newer players in the community may not have reached the current maximum Power Level in Destiny 2, and these players will generally get a significant amount of use from the Fireteam Power feature. At the same time, this feature is still going to be plenty useful for max-level players who find themselves using under-leveled gear in certain circumstances, like temporarily equipping Raid armor and weapons to use their exclusive perks immediately after obtaining them.

Overall, Fireteam Power will be opening up endgame content to low-level players and simultaneously allowing players to universally have more freedom in their choice of gear, so long as one designated player can provide a viable Power Level benchmark. This potentially means that players can even use sunset weapons in Destiny 2 that have had their maximum Power Level restricted, given that players are part of a well-prepared team. At any rate, the number of weapons and armor that will be viable to use in Destiny 2’s endgame content thanks to Fireteam Power has substantial implications for teamplay.

Fireteam Power is just one of many recent changes to team play in Destiny 2, with more still yet to come. Specifically, the Fireteam Finder feature coming to Destiny 2 is also going to be a substantial improvement to matchmaking and the overall multiplayer experience. Eventually, with both of these features working together it’s going to be incredibly easy for players to jump into any of Destiny 2’s endgame content without having to worry about the barrier that Power Levels can present. The Final Shape era of Destiny 2 is building up to be a very generous time for players, given all the existing and incoming changes that will improve the game’s cooperative elements.

Ultimately, Fireteam Power will provide more players the opportunity to experience Destiny 2’s infamously difficult endgame content, along with the sweet rewards. Despite being the epic finale of Destiny 2’s current saga, The Final Shape expansion is arguably going to be the best time for new players to get into Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
