Some Destiny 2 players are reportedly canceling their pre-orders for the Final Shape Expansion + Annual Pass, but are still getting to keep the Tessellation Exotic Fusion Rifle. The weapon was unveiled as a pre-order bonus at the recent Bungie showcase, which also revealed more details about Destiny 2: The Final Shape and beyond.
Pre-order bonuses are a common practice in the gaming industry, where developers use some lucrative offerings to attract more players for their upcoming releases. Bungie has been following the same trend, where it offers additional benefits to players who pre-order Destiny 2 expansions and its annual season pass. For instance, players got the Quicksilver Storm Exotic Auto Rifle in Destiny 2 before Lightfall launched upon ordering the annual pass edition. However, it seems that there is a major loophole in the content delivery system where players can cancel their pre-orders for the DLC on certain platforms but still keep some of the pre-order bonuses.
This was pointed out by Destiny 2 content creator Luckyy10P, who claimed to have heard a rumor that if players refunded The Final Shape pre-orders, they still got to keep the Tessellation Exotic Fusion Rifle. While this was still a rumor, several players responded to their post and confirmed that this was actually possible, and that it had been around for quite some time as well. For instance, several users pointed out that this was possible on Xbox as the platform doesn’t charge users for the pre-order until a few days before the DLC’s launch. However, this means that they still have the expansion but just haven’t paid for it yet, whereas a PlayStation user confirmed that they refunded the DLC but could still access the Exotic via Collections.
Another user also claimed to have done this with the Lightfall DLC, where they got access to the Quicksilver Storm Exotic even after refunding the expansion. However, while there is evidence for this working on Xbox and PlayStation, it isn’t clear if it would work on Steam or any other platform. Considering the fact that players could also do this before Destiny 2's Lightfall DLC launched, many players feel that it could be something Bungie did intentionally to get more pre-orders, or it could be something the developer missed, and this revelation could lead to it being fixed.
With The Final Shape, Bungie will look to provide a climactic conclusion to the Light and Darkness saga with its campaign and raid. The game’s live-service and content delivery is also set to change after the events of the final DLC, as Destiny 2 will shift from its seasonal model to the episodic model.
