Bungie has revealed that the Vex could be the Guardians’ biggest enemies after The Final Shape DLC for Destiny 2. The upcoming expansion will look to conclude the Light and Darkness saga in Destiny 2 and will also set the stage for the future of the game.

The Vex are a quiet possibly the most complex enemies in the game considering they have existed since the beginning of the Destiny universe. According to lore books, they were created as the result of the war between Light and Darkness during the creation of the universe. They managed to escape the simulation created by the warring forces and entered into the real world in the form of Radiolaria, or Vex Milk as The Drifter puts it. They eventually evolved into the living metal organisms with inscrutable intelligence who were capable of jumping across timelines, with the sole purpose of expanding their reach endlessly. Recently, the Vex have seemingly been absent from the picture, but Bungie has hinted that the reason behind that might be revealed after the events of Destiny 2 The Final Shape.

As reported by Shacknews, senior narrative designers Nikko Stevens and Robert Brookes shed some light on the Vex and their possible future in Destiny 2 during a roundtable interview. Brookes began by suggesting that players should play more of the Veil Containment mission in Destiny 2, as it will help them understand things better. Upon being asked about the Vex taking a backseat recently, Stevens explained that they are just waiting for the “two God behemoths” (Light and Darkness) to be done with their fighting. According to him, the Vex’s thinking is “I’ma let them take each other out and we’ll see what happens after that.” Furthermore, Stevens also explained how Bungie is taking a personalized approach with the Vex, so their story connects to “The Witness’ story via the Sol Divisive.”

Destiny 2 The Vex En Masse

The Books of Sorrow provide the earliest record of the Vex entering the Destiny universe thanks to Crota’s search for power. This is when they learned the Sword Logic doctrine that the Hive followed and seemingly found a new purpose. Considering the Sword Logic was a lie The Witness told the Hive, they are currently more aligned with the Darkness and could become obsessed with its purpose as well.

This Vex teaser drives the story of Destiny 2 into an interesting direction, as it essentially proves that there will be a lot more to the game's story beyond the events of The Final Shape. The Vex are immensely complex creatures and currently work on principles outside the paracausality of the Light and Darkness, which makes them formidable foes that the Guardians have yet to fully understand.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
