  • The fix primarily focuses on PvE content, where players have been using double special weapon loadouts due to the blurry lines between special and primary weapons' ammo economy.

As Destiny 2's current season is entering the homestretch, Bungie is offering insight into some of the changes set to arrive in Season 22's sandbox which will include a fix to double special ammo drops long thought to be a feature. It isn't uncommon in a game of this scale for smaller, non-game breaking bugs like this to slip through the proverbial cracks, as studios will typically focus on larger scale issues to address. While this bug may not be as serious as some others, it is one of the longest standing issues in the game as it dates back to Season of the Lost.

Destiny 2 is currently entering the final stretch of Season of the Deep, with players able to hop into the game and partake in the Solstice seasonal event for the closing weeks. Little is known as to what Season 22 will entail as of this writing, though Bungie has teased the seasonal narrative will revolve around locating Savathun's ghost, Immaru, and resurrecting the Witch Queen to aid in the battle against The Witness. Bungie is set to unveil more about the upcoming season, along with what it has in store for The Final Shape, with the next Destiny 2 showcase set for August 22, 2023.

While the upcoming showcase will provide a deep dive into the next major expansion and forthcoming season, the team has been giving some insight into a few of the smaller changes set to come in the seasonal sandbox update. The double special ammo drop bug is set to be among the changes, which was confirmed on the Destiny Massive Breakdowns podcast by Bungie developers Kyt Kutcha and Mercules, as part of the Season 22 launch update. It was confirmed the bug was the "unseen" result of the ammo change from Season of the Lost, which effectively gave primary weapons infinite ammo, and went unaddressed for roughly two years.

The fix is primarily meant for PvE content, which the pair explains has seen players make use of certain double special weapon loadouts in specific endgame activities due to the ammo economy of select weapons blurring the lines between special and primary weapons. One example they provide are loadouts making use of trace rifles or the Forerunner exotic sidearm and wave-frame grenade launches, as the former are weapons with ammo economy that fit into that gray area. The pair explain special weapons, within the modern sandbox, are more-so meant for "burst-damage phases" to endgame bosses and champions that can be used in-conjunction with complimentary primary and heavy weapons.

It joins a short, but already intriguing, list of changes set to arrive with the next season kicks off in a matter of weeks. The studio has already given previews to some of the more notable reworks on deck, the most notable as of this writing being the Season 22 economy and currency changes.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
