Highlights

  • The Lightbearers of Destiny are not immortal or unkillable, as many Guardians have fallen and suffered horrific fates worse than death.
  • The Sunbreakers, an ancient order of Titans, met a tragic end in a skirmish with The Red Legion, leaving them powerless against their enemy.
  • Taeko-3, an unseen Warlock, sacrificed herself by allowing the Hive to convert her into a ritual crystal, a horrifying ordeal conveyed through screams of terror.

With the ability to resurrect themselves through the use of their ghosts, it would be safe to assume that the Lightbearers of the Destiny universe are immortal, or at least, unkillable. The series takes the traditional revive mechanic of video games and inserts it into the lore, immersing players not just through the story, but through the gameplay as well.

Which patrol zones in Destiny 2 should you be spending the most time in?

Those who wield the light are not untouchable, however. Throughout Destiny's rich saga, numerous Guardians have fallen, had their ghosts crushed, or suffered horrific fates worse than death itself. Some of these outcomes are only hinted at through Grimoire cards or subtle items, whilst others are nerve-wracking scenes of horror that the player cannot avoid.

10 The Sunbreakers

Sunbreaker Titan

An ancient order of Titans dedicated to the fiery Solar class of the same name, The Sunbreakers were nomadic mercenaries that operated outside The Last City. Fighting for generations as warriors for hire, their ultimate fate comes down simply to tragic timing.

With the Light stolen by Cabal warlord Dominus Ghaul, The Sunbreakers found their number being picked off one by one in a skirmish with The Red Legion. It was certainly a traumatizing end for the once great order, who were now powerless against an enemy they had fallen countless times.

9 Tevis Larsen

destiny 2 void hunter

Another Guardian caught in the wrong place without the Light, Tevis was a good friend of Cayde-6 and an expert Nightstalker, calling upon the Void to dispatch his enemies. He was also noted as being a huge gambler and owed Cayde a sizable amount of glimmer from past debts.

At some point prior to The Taken King expansion, Tevis traveled through a Vex warp gate into The Black Garden, the rumored birthplace of The Vex. By mistake, Tevis found that the gate had closed before his Ghost could come through, severing him from the light. The Hunter was forced to fight hopelessly against waves of Vex until he perished.

8 Taeko-3

destiny 2 savathun song

An unseen Warlock who aids the player during the Savathun's Song strike, Taeko-3 was originally part of a nine-Guardian Fireteam that went deep into Titan to deal with a Hive ritual. Incredibly cocky, Taeko-3 quickly became overwhelmed when her eight teammates were killed and converted into ritual crystals.

By the time The Guardian finds her, she is fearful of the Hive and begs the Guardian to go back, but eventually resolves to help. As a final defiant act, she allows the Hive to convert her into a ritual crystal in proximity to the lead Shrieker, a horrifying ordeal that is conveyed through screams of terror on the comms.

7 The Old Iron Lords

Destiny series The SIVA mutated Iron Lord awakens in the SIVA Replication Chamber on Earth

Before Iron Banner brought in a new generation of wolves, The Iron Lords consisted of a few Lightbearers intent on protecting those who could not protect themselves. They were primarily active during The Last City's construction in the Dark Age, using brutal methods to end the plethora of warlords that had claimed territory.

6 Asher Mir

asher mir with a vex arm in destiny 2

Sarcastic, bitter, and begrudgingly caring, Asher Mir is the former vendor of Io, prior to its vaulting in 2020. During his time on the moon of Jupiter, Mir noticeably had a Vex arm in place of his real one, and though it was sometimes mistaken as an improvised prosthetic, the truth was far worse.

While on a mission, Mir was captured and traumatically experimented on by the Vex. The Procedure caused him to gradually turn into one of the living machines, a horrifying fate that culminated with him becoming one with the Vex network, effectively scattered across billions of simulations before disappearing from the Nexus entirely.

5 Yardarm-4 And Rekkana

Destiny 2 Garden of Salvation raid scenery

Two of the three Guardians that made up the Kentarch 3 Fireteam, the Titan Yardarm-4 and Warlock Rekkana traveled with their Hunter ally Lisbon-13 into the dangerous Black Garden, intent on hunting a powerful Vex relic: The Divinity Trace rifle.

Separated from what they knew, the entire Fireteam began to develop darker personalities, communing with The Darkness and eventually losing their connection to the light. Rekkana and Yardarm were gifted powers by The Darkness and persuaded to think Lisbon had betrayed them, which ultimately drove them insane. These events culminated in a firefight within the Fireteam, and Lisbon was forced to kill two of his closest friends.

4 Katabasis

corpse of katabasis hunter from presage mission

A treacherous Hunter who served as a Shadow of Emperor Calus, Katabasis served aboard the Cabal warship Glykon Volantus, where he met his slow, terrible, end. The ship's objective was to help Calus commune with The Darkness, but this mission fell apart when the captured Scorn overran the ship whilst The Darkness drove the remaining crew insane.

For days, Katabasis was stalked and attacked by the Scorn, continuously killed and then revived by his Ghost Gilgamesh as the pair grew more and more hopeless that rescue would ever come. Eventually, tired of their situation, Gilgamesh begged to be destroyed, and the former Guardian reluctantly complied. Having lost all morale and the will to live, Katabasis was quickly killed by the swarms of Scorn.

3 Joxer

Joxer Lightfall close up

A seasoned Titan who served during The Great Ahamkara Hunt, Joxer was a frequenter of Gambit, and thus, a long-term associate of The Drifter. After the permanent death of three Guardians, Joxer turned his back on the rogue Lightbearer, becoming a loyal member of The Vanguard once more.

Joxer was chosen to enter the portal carved into The Traveler by The Witness, despite the protests of his Ghost. Confident till the end, Joxer dismissed the concerns and flew his ship inside, undergoing a violent procedure similar to what occurs in a Black Hole, where his body was liquidized and ejected from the portal back into known space as a mess of ship parts and Guardian.

2 Kabr

A Titan Wearing Kabr's Armor Set

Obsessed with the mythical Vault of Glass, Kabr the Legionless was a part of the six-man Fireteam that breached the Vault but failed to pass The Templar and its Oracles. Kabr watched as his teammates, which included close friends Praedyth and Pahanin, were erased from existence, and he was left all alone.

Determined not to die in vain, Kabr forged his light into The Aegis shield and perished shortly after, lightless and lost in time. Years later, a transmission claiming to be Kabr was discovered; whether it was a trick of The Vex, or the poor Titan, digitally trapped for eternity.

1 The First Crota Fireteam

Destiny series Eris Morn surrounded by Nightmares on the Moon

Eris Morn and her five companions were one of the first teams to take on the Hive god, bitter from the chaos of The Great Disaster. Led by Eriana-3, the six entered The Temple of Crota and were picked off one by one in the dark tunnels of The Hellmouth.

The survivors were constantly hounded by the screams of their fallen comrades, as well as the endless mass of thralls that prowled the underground maze. Before long, only Eris remained, lightless and lost. She spent years trying to find a way to escape the horror, eventually emerging without her eyes or ghost, hellbent on revenge. For Guardians of The Tower, there are few documented horrors as grim as the fate of the First Crota Fireteam.
