Destiny 2 fans have been delving through its universe of content since it released back in 2017, but they've been exploring it with people on their own platform. Now, thanks to a mistake from Bungie, some gamers are encountering players from other platforms.

Bungie intends on releasing crossplay for Destiny 2 in Fall 2021, but it looks like the developers are already at work on the feature as multiple fans of the intergalactic FPS have noticed Guardians from other platforms in their instances. This crossplay implementation released early due to an accident on Bungie's end, but it will remain live for the rest of the week.

The Verge’s Tom Warren was among several Destiny 2 fans to notice the early implementation of crossplay, and he was able to confirm that it was an unintentional mistake from Bungie which will soon be undone. Bungie will be fixing the crossplay mistake later this week according to the Lead Community Manager at Bungie who's known as Cozmo on Twitter. In the meantime, Cozmo recommends Destiny 2 fans take advantage of the temporary implementation of crossplay before Bungie undoes its mistake. This means Destiny 2 fans have a very limited window to try the temporarily implemented crossplay before it disappears on a date this week that Bungie hasn't confirmed, making it anyone's guess.

Destiny 2 just entered its Season of the Splicer and fans who play this week will be able to explore the new content and activities with their friends on other platforms. Google Stadia fans will be particularly impacted by the implementation of crossplay as the platform's Destiny 2 community is lacking compared to other platforms, but eagle-eyed fans have already seen Stadia players being matched with Guardians on PC. Players who are looking for some intense Crucible PvP action are already being matched with counterparts on other platforms, although this will all change once Bungie fixes the mistake it made later this week.

Considering the sudden release of crossplay for Destiny 2, it seems strange that Bungie is waiting until later this year to enable the new feature now that it has gone live. Since crossplay is live right now and Destiny 2 fans have been encouraged to test the feature out while it's up, Bungie may gain some valuable data from this mistake that it wouldn't have gotten if every Guardian had to wait until Fall to play with friends on other platforms.

Destiny 2 is available right now for Google Stadia, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
