The last five years of Destiny 2's narrative has seen some drastic changes to the larger universe, many of which the former Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 will be experiencing for the first time upon his return as one player points out. The Final Shape is set to mark the end of The Light and Darkness Saga, an event which has been building in the game's universe for the better part of a decade. While the plot points leading up to this final expansion in the saga has been alot for players to take in, the return of Cayde-6 will give a fresh set of eyes to everything that has been unfolding since his death.

Little has been revealed about what is in store for players with Destiny 2's next major expansion, The Final Shape, and how it will impact the universe going forward. The information known about it, as of this writing, is it will see the return of Cayde-6 in some form to aid players along with bringing an end to the ancient conflict between The Traveler and The Witness. Bungie is set to share more information about what the expansion has in store, along with seasons leading up to The Final Shape's release, with its next Destiny 2 showcase on August 22, 2023.

The death of Cayde-6 in Forsaken was, at the time, considered one of the biggest moments in Destiny 2's narrative as Bungie decided to kill off its most popular character. In the five years since, though, there have been no shortage momentous reveals and plot points that have fundamentally changed the understanding of the Destiny universe, whether it was the disappearance of multiple planets such as Mercury and Io to Savathun and her Hive brood gaining the Light. It is a drastically different world than the one Cayde-6 left behind in 2018, and Reddit user Timberwolfer21 points out what is awaiting the former Hunter Vanguard in humorous fashion.

Bungie made a point of highlighting this in the first teaser trailer for The Final Shape, though not in any notable detail. Instead, Ikora Rey provides only short summaries of how guardians have "slain gods, vanquished nightmares," and "fought alongside those we once fought against." By comparison, Timberwolfer's post goes into detail about some of these moments, many of which could hit Cayde-6 very hard due to his friendship with characters such as Amanda Holliday.

The developments since Cayde-6's death set the stage for what could be an interesting character dynamic when he returns in The Final Shape's campaign. Bungie already has plenty on its plate, narratively, to juggle in the expansion with bringing the conflict with The Witness to a satisfying conclusion and setting the stage for what is to come afterward. While the upcoming showcase may give players a hint of it, they will have to wait for the expansion's February 2024 release to see how the Light and Darkness Saga comes to a close.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
