Destiny 2's Season of the Haunted tackled interesting narrative points for the franchise by addressing Calus and his relationship with The Witness, all while allowing other characters to heal from their scars. This trend has been going on since the beginning of Year 4 and the Beyond Light expansion, where Destiny 2's stories started to explore bigger underlying themes and delve deeper into narrative arcs that had only been hinted at prior. With The Witch Queen, Bungie also put a face to the next big villain of the series by introducing The Witness, posing more questions than it really answered.

As such, Destiny 2 fans are eager to know where the game is headed next, especially after all the secrecy that enveloped Season of the Haunted. What is currently known is that upcoming expansions Lightfall and The Final Shape will eventually wrap up the Light and Darkness saga of Destiny as a whole, which leaves room for a lot of questions regarding what's coming up next. Yet, while Lightfall is only seven months away, Bungie has been very quiet about what the new expansion entails, with no information about its contents shared on Bungie Day. There is a likely reason for this, and it starts with Season of the Risen.

Why Destiny 2's Lightfall Should Not Be Revealed

Season of the Risen was the accompanying Season for The Witch Queen's launch, and it was praised for being relatively condensed into six weekly updates. Season of the Risen tackled themes of the Hive Lightbearers and Savathun's endgame after her demise, and it was about the morally gray area in which Destiny 2 characters often find themselves in. Hive Lightbearers might be hinting at Lightfall and The Final Shape in a way, as they are the first in-game enemies that actually have a Ghost and are capable of coming back to life.

There's the possibility that there was more than meets the eye with this new mechanic, which set a precedent in Destiny 2 and could be linked to events in the upcoming expansions. In fact, one of the most recent recurring narrative points in Destiny 2 has been the so-called Dark Future - a timeline where the Guardians lose their fight against the Darkness and are overwhelmed by it, seduced by its promises. Lightfall and The Final Shape could have players fight against Guardians who succumbed to the Darkness, embodying the conflict of Light versus Dark where one needs to crush the other.

The Dark Future is a big part of Season of the Risen and The Witch Queen through the Vox Obscura mission, which is set on Mars and follows players dismantling one of Calus' operations while also gathering data about the transmissions that Psions are sending. Among these transmissions is one where Caiatl, daughter of Calus and empress of the Cabal, sees images of a city under siege, the resurrection of Eramis the Shipstealer, the return of the Leviathan, and the Traveler infected by the Darkness. These are images from a future that could be, and one that appears to be happening as the Leviathan has already returned in Season of the Haunted.

With this in mind, it becomes more fitting for Bungie not to talk about Lightfall just yet, considering there are still two whole Seasons of content to unfold before its release. Discussing Lightfall's content now would undermine Bungie's work on Destiny 2 over the past years by prematurely setting expectations about what's to come in the next few Seasons. Ultimately, there is no good time to drop more information about Lightfall without potentially revealing new plot points, so Bungie's silence is understandable.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
