10 The Old One

The Old One

When humans were created in the world of Demon's Souls, they were given souls which gave them the ability of perception. When humans were created, however, so was a demon with an insatiable appetite for souls. This demon came to be known as "The Old One."

The Old One laid in sleep for centuries awaiting the perfect opportunity to strike at the world. This opportunity finally presented itself at the height of the human's use of souls by using it as a means of performing the Soul Arts. When the demon awoke, it brought with him the deep fog which enveloped the world, and also demons who act as soul gatherers for The Old One.

9 The Monumentals

The Monumentals are a group of powerful individuals who mastered the form of Soul Arts. These mages, if you will, got so powerful that they became the world's overseers, controllers, and masters. Although powerful, the Monumentals wanted more. They wanted to learn more about the Soul Arts, and this lust for power led to the awakening of The Old One.

When the wrath of The Old One was all done and passed, the Monumentals themselves became sacrificial entities, tying their lives to the Nexus they belong to, sustaining it for as long as they can to ensure sanity and hope still remains in the world.

8 The First Scourge

When The Old One awoke and demons ravaged the world, humans did not simply lie down and accept defeat. Instead, they took up arms and battled the demons. They eventually found a way to lull The Old One back to sleep, ridding most of the world of the deep fog that once wrapped it. By then, however, it was too late. The world had become too unstable, too destroyed, and too demon-ridden. This calamity is known as The First Scourge.

7 The Soul Arts

With the souls within every man, came the ability to use Soul Arts. This form of magic was powerful and it drove many to become power-lust and hungry for more. With immense power, however, comes causality. The very thing that made humans powerful was also the same that brought them down to their knees for it is this that awoke The Old One from its slumber.

After the First Scourge, the use of Soul Arts became banned. No one was allowed to use this form of magic anymore as to not wake The Old One once again. History, however, has a tendency of repeating itself.

6 King Allant's Desperation

King Allant can be killed easily with poison.

One kingdom that managed to rise again after the First Scourge was Boletaria. The ruler of this land is King Allant, a benevolent ruler and a courageous warrior who loved his people intently and battled the demons that plagued the world to protect his kingdom.

The endeavor to battle demons proved more difficult than King Allant envisioned. At one point, he discovered the Nexus and the power of Soul Arts. In the Nexus, he also met a powerful demon, a demon who would teach him the prohibited form of magic, a demon known as the Maiden in Black.

5 The Maiden In Black

Maiden in Black PS5

The Maiden in Black is a demon who arrived alongside the waking of The Old One and the spread of the deep fog. The maiden carries a firelit staff which she uses to light the candles all around the Nexus to keep the area bright and lively. She also acts as a caretaker for the souls that are bound to the Nexus.

The Maiden in Black is said to have the ability to suck out the souls of humans, immediately killing them. It is also said that the Maiden eventually lost this ability sometime ago. However, after King Allant visited the Nexus, met the Maiden, and returned to Boletaria, he garnered this very same ability.

4 The Second Scourge

With King Allant's discovery of the Soul Arts, its knowledge became widespread once again. No longer is it prohibited as it once was. Similar to the past, Boletaria prospered under the knowledge of this magical ability. However, it wasn't the resurgence of the Soul Arts that awakened the Old One this time around but King Allant himself.

Becoming more and more hungry for power, King Allant, with the newly forged Soulbrandt in hand, returned to the Nexus and awakened the Old One himself to satisfy his lust. This brought on the Second Scourge. The deep fog returned and the demons along with it. Ever since his journey to the Nexus, the king has not been seen since or heard from once again.

3 Journeying Heroes

Tower Knight is easy to kill once the archers are taken care of.

After the disappearance of King Allant and the knowledge of the Soul Arts and the Second Scourge spread, warriors, knights, nobles, priests, and many other humans of all walks of life braved the deep fog to head to Boletaria. While the reasons for their journey vary, one thing remains. Those who enter the deep fog are bound within it forever. It is said, however, that there one human who managed to break the barrier and exit the fog. It was he who let the world know of Boletaria's plight. A knight named Vallafax.

2 The Archdemons

Maiden Astraea can be killed from afar and Garl Vinland can be avoided

When demons gather enough souls, they fuse all of these souls together to form the much powerful demon soul. These forms of souls are so powerful that they're able to transform any body it's inhabiting, including humans who manage to discover how to gather up souls. The Old One is able to discern these powerful beings and it appoints them as his own archdemons.

If the demons are The Old One's foot soldiers, the archdemons are his lieutenants. They command and control the lesser demons in service to the Old One. The demons collect souls, give them to their archdemon, and the archdemon then gives it to The Old One. Many of the Archdemons found in Boletaria are former warriors and heroes who traversed the land, who somehow became demons, and managed to get the attention of The Old One.

At the peak of the demon's control of Boletaria, when King Allant is still nowhere to be found, a brave soul who does not fear death traversed the fog and entered the cursed land. After falling at the hands of the Vanguard Demon, or the Dragon God on other instances, the hero found themself at the Nexus, laying at the foot of the Maiden in Black. The hero is then tasked to rid the world of demons, supposedly to save it once more.

Thus, the hero moved forward and succeeded in so much where others before them have failed. After the hero manages to defeat most of The Old One's demons and archdemons, they are then summoned to meet The Old One itself. It is here that the hero must decide on whether they will lull The Old One back to its slumber, or listen to its bidding and become its slave as King Allant did before him.
