Like most fighting game anime adaptations, Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles has big shoes to fill. Cyberconnect2 has to build a fighting system that's both competitive and fun while staying true to Demon Slayer's source material.
If that wasn't enough, most players aren't going to be satisfied with just a versus mode and will want to play through the anime's story. Cyberconnect2 anticipated this, and Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles comes with a comprehensive single-player adventure mode.
The adventure mode is split into chapters, each one covering a different arc of the anime and manga. Each chapter also includes an optional special mission, which doesn't add to the story but provides a difficult optional fight.
Demon Slayer: Hinokami Chronicles Chapter List
There are 8 chapters in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. There are nine if the prologue chapter is counted, but that chapter is only a single tutorial fight, while other chapters feature multiple fights and exploration sections.
The game skips the initial arc and begins with Tanjiro's training in the mountains. It ends with Demon Slayer's Mugen Train arc. While Demon Slayer's manga is completed, it seems the game's story doesn't want to get ahead of the anime. The chapter list is as follows:

- Chapter 3: Death Match in Asakusa
- Chapter 4: Echoing Drums
- Chapter 5: Hinokami

The Adventure Mode's Rewards
Just as there are players who will only be interested in Demon Slayer: Hinokami Chronicles for the adventure mode, there will be players who view the adventure mode as an afterthought and will want to focus solely on the multiplayer. Unfortunately, playing through the game's adventure mode is necessary to enjoy the full game.
While Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles features a wide selection of characters, plenty of fan favorites start locked and are only unlocked by completing adventure mode chapters. Nezuko is only playable after completing chapter 2, and Inosuke and Zenitsu are only playable after completing chapter 4.
It's disappointing that there's currently no alternate way to unlock characters, but that might change in the future. Like most modern fighting games, Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles has planned post-launch support. Right now, the first priority seems to be introducing new characters, such as playable demons, but hopefully, Cyberconnect2 will patch in a new unlock condition.
