Chapters 128-136

Demon Slayer has often shown high stakes and dangerous situations for the main characters to be in. From fighting some of the lower moons in season 1 and then facing off against the lower tiers of the Upper Moon Demons in the subsequent seasons, Tanjiro and the others are no strangers to the harsh environments and conditions of the world that they live in.

However, the Hashira Training arc gives the gang a much-needed dose of relaxation and ease that they have deserved ever since the start of their journey. At the same time, they receive training for the challenges that lie ahead. The events of this season show that while they aren't facing down the strongest demons anymore, the entire Demon Slayer Corps is training to defeat Muzan and end the scourge of the demons once and for all.

Picking up from where season 3's Swordsmith Village arc ended, it is shown that Nezuko has regained control of her humanity even while in her demonic state, leading to her being a special demon that can survive in sunlight. Since sunlight is the natural enemy of demons, news of her discovery has reached far and wide, and it is known that Muzan Kibutsuji has plans to abduct her for his own goals, due to which demon attacks have largely stopped for a while.

The following season picks up with the remaining members of the Demon Slayer Corps going through extensive training, which the Hashira themselves have to overlook. Under their guidance and experience, the rest of the Corps gets the greatest training possible to combat the threats that await them in the world, to improve the general health and strength of each member as well as perfecting every aspect of swordsmanship under the best teachers.

A Well-Needed Change Of Pace

The core members of the Demon Slayer cast have seen their fair share of horrors over the course of the series, so it's quite nice to see much more lighthearted and humorous moments. In this arc, Tanjiro goes to every single Hashira and learns different aspects of fighting from each of them. The interactions between the Hashira and those under them are often hilarious, as Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are usually given gentler treatment as compared to the other members due to their previously established relations.

Another great aspect of this arc comes from the fact that every main character gets a chance to shine, and those who haven't seen much screen time get some well-deserved character development. This helps to humanize much of the remaining Hashira by subjecting them to often hilarious situations in which they are responsible for teaching the lower members of the Corps who aren't as experienced as they are.

Such moments include Giyu and Tanjiro engaging in a Soba eating contest and Zenitsu's constant fawning over Nezuko, among others. However, this light tone does not distract from the seriousness of the overall narrative, as there are quite a few moments, even in this comparatively gentle arc, that remind the viewers of the brutality of this world, such as Gyomei's backstory, Giyu and Sanemi's sparring match and Zenitsu's new mission.

Incredible Animation And Spectacle

Many critics of Demon Slayer claim the story to be quite basic and that the characters as largely uninteresting. However, one thing that no detractor can bash about the series is the animation, as Ufotable has consistently knocked it out of the park in terms of bringing the pages of the manga to life with consistently beautiful animation. Since the animation for all the past arcs has been gorgeous, season 4 is primed to meet this standard as well.

Even though this arc is light on the action aspects of the story compared to the seasons before, the training that everyone goes through is grueling, introducing many new concepts to the world that would look beautiful when animated. Even the training themselves would be worth the watch. This is because the Hashira are the apex of physical and mental fitness, so they introduce their respective areas of expertise with brilliant skill.

A Perfect Set-Up For The Future

Akaza-upper-3

Even though the Hashira training arc is a great watch, it truly shines because of how it sets up the future of the series. This training arc is followed by the incredible Infinity Castle arc, which is the final arc of the Demon Slayer story and one that raises the stakes like nothing before, calling on the strength of the entire Demon Slayer Corps to use all that they have learned under the training of the Hashira.

Some amazing callbacks to the Hashira Training arc are seen within the Infinity Castle. By taking everything that they have learned in this training and using it against the rest of the Upper Moons and Muzan himself, the Corps shows that they are a force to be reckoned with. The Infinity Castle arc is the culmination of everything that the series has set up from the start, and the Hashira Training arc is the perfect lead-up to that.

There's no other way to go but forward.

Demon Slayer can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll.
