Fans awaiting the release of the third chapter of Deltarune can rest easy, as Toby Fox has given an update on the much-anticipated game’s development. Toby Fox is the creator of the Deltarune series, as well as the creator of one of the most beloved independent games, Undertale.

Undertale was released in September of 2015 and has managed to cultivate one of gaming’s most loyal fanbases with the help of the independent title’s engaging characters, interesting storyline, intelligent dialogue, and catchy original music score. Toby Fox’s follow-up to Undertale is Deltarune, a five-chapter series that has been in development since 2018. The first two Deltarune chapters have been released, but it’s been over two years since Fox has updated the fans on the third chapter.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Everything, Toby Fox reassured fans that development for Deltarune Chapter 3 is coming along smoothly, as he and his team are finishing up the final overworld area. Fox explained that this final area is a lot like the Queen’s castle in the second chapter, except this chapter is playable all the way through, with music he created back in 2016. It’s been a difficult chapter for Fox, with many different pieces being involved that need to be “rolled over with a steamroller” to fix some of the problems, but he also reassures fans that many of the pieces involved have already been polished.

Toby Fox also highlighted how strange this newest chapter will be, noting that there will be many unusual gameplay elements this time and that this Deltarune chapter won’t be as story-heavy. “Since it's so frivolous, I feel a bit self-conscious about it... but, at least, I got to try something different!”

Fox also adds a quick update on future Deltarune chapters as well, mentioning that some members of his team are working on small elements, such as bullet patterns and puzzles for the future titles. Fox promises that Deltarune Chapter 4 will be more of a standard experience for those who may not like the third chapter’s direction.

Fans of Toby Fox’s work have gotten used to long wait times when it comes to updates to Deltarune’s story. There was a three-year gap between Deltarune Chapter 1 and DeltaruneChapter 2’s release dates, so patience is in abundance when it comes to this fan base. Even if it takes until 2030 for all the chapters of Deltarune to come out, the Undertale fan base knows it’s worth the wait. Thankfully, it looks like fans won’t have to wait too much longer for DeltaruneChapter 3.

Deltarune Chapters 1 and 2 are available on PC, PS4, and Switch.
