Sometimes, it feels good to be bad. Deathloop features an eternal struggle between Colt and Julianna, the two central characters of the game. While Colt seems desperate to escape the loop that keeps him trapped on the island, Julianna wants nothing more than to keep the same party going, over and over.

Players that enjoy causing misery and challenging other players can enjoy their time on the island as Julianna, and embark on a different journey to Colt: to protect the loop. In this invasion mode, players will fill the shoes of Julianna, invade players’ games as Colt, and will need to use their brains and tools to ensure victory.

8 Pick The Best Loadout

When players enter the invasion mode, they won’t just be thrown into a spiral of mayhem against another Colt. Each time they decide to protect the loop, they will set up their loadout. Within this loadout are weapons, trinkets, and powers, all with options unique to the individual Julianna that wants to make Colt suffer, in a fun way.

Loadouts shouldn’t be ignored. As Colt continues to search for ways to break the loop, he will become stronger, and the player behind his eyes will grow in power and experience, making for a greater challenge for Julianna. Having a great loadout will make sure competition is on equal grounds.

7 Maintain Ammunition

By killing Eternalists, Colt can be sure to keep his ammo count high. Enemies will drop bullets like they’re carrying stockpiles of the stuff. Considering Julianna can’t kill Eternalists, or shouldn’t, ammo will be more scarce for Julianna players than it will be for Colt players.

Due to this fact, it would be wise for Julianna players not to spray-and-pray when it comes to a shootout with Colt. The need to kill Colt three times means that players cannot rely on an abundance of bullets they do not have.

6 Stay Patient

Patience is a virtue as they say, and in Deathloop, that’s certainly the case. Players will be in an intense game of cat and mouse, and either player can be the cat. By staying patient, Julianna players will be able to wait for Colt to slip up, and get detected by Eternalists.

Through the act of patience, players can catch Colt by surprise, as the maps are sprawling and intricate, meaning that finding each other will not be as simple as running into each other on the street, that is unless both players don’t have a plan.

5 Find Health Stations

Health Stations are identifiable by their gigantic red and white pill logos with a neon sign. Luckily for the invader, these health stations work for both Colt and Julianna. Say if Julianna fell off a roof, or has survived a fight with Colt, then a health station is a great way for players to re-enter the fight without fatal injury.

Not only is locating the health stations essential for knowing where to go when injured, but it could be one of the locations that the enemy Colt is hiding at, simply waiting for the right moment to heal their wounds after a battle with Eternalists, or a hunting Julianna.

4 Be Aware Of Eternalists

Eternalists are the enemies present on each level of Deathloop. They’re cannon fodder, and how the game lets Colt kill enemies with zero repercussions. They’re rather wild in nature, as they are repeating the first day on the island with zero awareness, but full understanding that they won’t be dead forever.

Since Eternalists have set spawn points, players will be aware if one goes missing. Bodies do not remain on the island but disappear after death to await the next day for a repeating loop. That means that Julianna can follow Colt’s death path through the lack of bodies guarding and patrolling.

3 Understand The Map

There is more than one sandbox area in Deathloop. These intricately designed maps are perfect to run around in for Colt, who will have to deal with Eternalists all on different quests for themselves. The plethora of areas and routes mean that Colt can travel across the map safely, and Julianna will be too, as long as players understand the map.

It’s important to know the nooks and crannies of the map that they have invaded. It could be disastrous for them to find Colt, and then get lost due to an escape route, or because they took a wrong turn and are now trapped in a dead-end alleyway.

2 Protect The Antenna

When Julianna spawns in the game, an antenna will open up, and lock down the tunnel system that Colt uses to escape the level alive. To open up the tunnels, Colt will have to use the Hackamajig to hack and disable the antenna blocking their escape.

Considering the antenna is the primary target for a Colt that wants to finish the mission and survive, they will be making a runner for that antenna soon. It’s best to patrol the area and be aware that Colt will have to reach the antenna if they want to leave, so it’s a prime target for setting a trap.

1 Know How Colts Work

The best way to hunt is to learn how to be hunted. To begin protecting the loop, players need to reach a certain point in the story as Colt themselves. This means that players will have a good sense of how Colt works, considering they have been in his shoes before. They know his weapons, powers, and objectives.

When players take the mission to protect the loop and hunt Colt as Julianna, they should have a sense of familiarity with hunting Colts. Although players will not be identical in their loadouts and style, they certainly have an objective, and three lives to boot.

Deathloop is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
