Death Stranding drew criticism and acclaim when it was released earlier this year. The game divided opinions more drastically than most and while its new genre of gameplay may not have pleased everyone, it would be hard to deny that the characters in Death Stranding didn't leave a lasting impression. One of the actors from Death Stranding has now given fans hope for new content.

Hideo Kojima is known for his enigmatic releases, even one of the most successful franchises, Metal Gear Solid was shrouded in mystery as the fifth installment was announced. Whether Kojima is planning a new Death Stranding game, film, DLC, or a spin-off is a mystery. However, actor and director Nicolas Winding Refn's latest Instagram post will give fans plenty to be excited about.

Refn's post claims that his character, "Heartman will return". Refn is most recognisable for his work as a director on acclaimed films such as Drive and Vahalla Rising. The latter featured his co-star in Death Stranding Mads Mikkelsen. Whether Heartman is returning to the gaming world, or not, remains to be seen but players will hope that more content comes with Death Stranding's next update. However, a DLC may be a better vehicle for the return of the character.

There are plenty of unresolved mysteries in Death Stranding that many would want to be answered through a DLC. While fans will hope for additional content, Kojima Productions have teased ventures outside of games. If there is a cinematic collaboration between Refn and Kojima this would likely keep fans just as happy as a new game. If the previous work of Kojima and Refn is an indicator of the style of new content, then viewers will likely find enigmatic narratives that spark critical discussion.

Death Stranding has received something of a reappraisal since Metacritic removed the review bombing scores. The game now looks to have had a more positive reception than it originally appeared. How the Death Stranding universe can continue to expand and cater to its loyal fans will undoubtedly be an interesting task for Kojima Productions to navigate. What is apparent is that regardless of reviews, Kojima has some incredible talent on his side and that in itself should build excitement for whatever project Heartman returns in.

Death Stranding is out now for PS4 with a PC release to follow in the summer of 2020.
