Highlights

  • Marvel's gaming division can capitalize on the hype around Deadpool and Wolverine by creating new projects, starting with hyping up Marvel's Wolverine by Insomniac.
  • Marvel should consider developing another Deadpool game to further support the character's popularity and the anticipation for Deadpool and Wolverine. Other subtle ways to give them the spotlight include collaborations in Fortnite and Overwatch 2.

Marvel has been exceptionally busy since Super Bowl Sunday, treating fans to several announcements and first looks at upcoming projects. X-Men '97 finally has its first trailer, showcasing how the newly minted Marvel Animation studio is continuing the fan-favorite X-Men animated series. After many months of leaks and speculation, Matt Shakman's The Fantastic Four also has its ensemble cast led by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Perhaps the most exciting reveal of all, however, was the first trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine, which looks to bring the popular mutants into the MCU.

In just a few days, Deadpool and Wolverine's trailer has been one of the most watched in history, demonstrating just how important this project is for Marvel fans. With all the hype behind the film, Marvel could find opportunities to channel it further into various gaming projects. Marvel's Wolverine is an obvious place to start, and developer Insomniac could capitalize on the film's release by making some announcements of its own. Marvel's ambition doesn't have to stop there, however, as the titular protagonists' versatility and popularity could start a domino effect of new projects from Marvel's gaming division.

Thanks to the leaked gameplay for Marvel’s Wolverine, a Mature ESRB rating for the Insomniac project seems almost guaranteed.

Insomniac Could Finally Show Wolverine Gameplay

Marvel's Wolverine is one of many games that was revealed alongside a promising cinematic trailer but hasn't received a substantial update in years. With developer Insomniac a few months removed from Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it may soon find an opportunity to show gamers what it's been working on. Deadpool and Wolverine's release happens to line up nicely with the time of year most developers make their big announcements, so a Wolverine gameplay reveal only a few weeks before the film's release could be the perfect way to build hype for both projects, even though they are unrelated aside from their titular mutant protagonists.

Marvel Should Take A Chance On Another Deadpool Game

Deadpool has been a particularly popular comic character for some time now, but the one medium he's struggled to gain a foothold in is video games. 2013's Deadpool from High Moon Studios is a commendable hack-and-slash, but it's both outdated by today's standards and difficult to acquire due to licensing issues.

After the success Deadpool has had in theaters, and the clear anticipation for Deadpool and Wolverine, it would be in Marvel's best interest to pursue another AAA title featuring the Merc with a Mouth. With Marvel's current slate of upcoming games, it would likely be something that doesn't release for many years, but it would nonetheless demonstrate a clear support for the character as well as Deadpool and Wolverine's impact.

Marvel Could Find Other Ways To Give Deadpool And Wolverine The Spotlight

While there would be obvious synergy in announcing large projects around the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, there are more subtle things Marvel can do as well. An obvious choice would be bringing Deadpool and Wolverine back to the Fortnite shop, perhaps with new skins that better fit their film appearances. Overwatch 2 is another title that has had its fair share of crossovers in recent memory, and a Marvel crossover that features Deadpool and Wolverine at the center could generate a lot of hype for the upcoming film.

As the only MCU film releasing in 2024, there's a bit of pressure on Deadpool and Wolverine to perform well at the box office. The titular characters' appearance in the MCU is likely to draw a considerable number of fans, but to maximize its potential, some synergy with Marvel video games should be a priority. Any news on Marvel's Wolverine around the film's release would surely garner some attention and the sky is the limit for how Marvel can turn its next film into a springboard for future gaming projects.
