The Deadpool 3 release date was difficult news for fans. However, further disappointing updates may be on the horizon, as Marvel Studios' planned timeframe to resume production seems less likely to happen,

Deadpool 3 marks the long-awaited induction of Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth into the MCU. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine returns, further establishing a multiverse connection between Fox's X-Men movies and the MCU. However, the ongoing Screen Actors Guild Strike forced Deadpool 3 production to shut down, eventually prompting Marvel Studios to delay the film's May 2024 release to an unknown date.

Deadline reports Marvel Studios hoped to resume Deadpool 3 filming in January 2024. However, this plan looks less likely each day the strike continues. As of the morning of October 29, 2023, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have not closed a new three-year contract. However, even if a new agreement was signed soon, the initial report on the Deadpool 3 release date delay noted that reassembling the cast and crew right away wouldn't be possible. Consequently, even if Deadpool 3 can resume filming in the first half of 2024, a release date delay would not be avoided.

Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 3 Writers Strike

Deadpool 3's delay is upsetting information for fans because the film is expected to lay the groundwork for Marvel Studios' Avengers: Secret Wars adaptation. While Doctor Strange 2 set the stage by bringing back Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier and introducing John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic (a character who is expected to be recast for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot) for cameo appearances, Deadpool 3 set photos and rumors suggest Fox's past Marvel characters will play a more integral role in the plot. Bringing these characters from non-MCU would certainly go a long way toward building anticipation for Avengers: Secret Wars' expected multiversal conflict.

Of course, many fans recognize the actors' strike goals are more significant than Deadpool 3 or any other blockbuster. She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany slammed Disney CEO Bog Iger for saying the writers and actors were making "unrealistic" demands, and the studios have found difficulty garnering sympathy for their side. Most fans believe writers and actors deserve fair compensation for their work. Whether they'll receive such fair compensation in time for Deadpool 3 to resume production early next year remains unknown.
