Look Hugh’s back! Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his iconic role as X-Men’s Wolverine for 2024’s Deadpool 3. The film will feature Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their respective characters Deadpool and Wolverine, in their first journey into the MCU. It’s a poetic experience to have Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman enter the MCU together, after being in the 20th Century Fox universe for over a decade and more.

With the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, many may want to discover the long-standing history of Deadpool and Wolverine in the comics. Deadpool and Wolverine’s best comics are when they are at odds and bantering, and luckily, there are quite a few Deadpool/Wolverine comics to choose from.

9 Deadpool (1999) #27

It’s normal to feel the blues now and then. Depression is a real mental health issue that many suffer from. However, in the case of Deadpool, help comes in the form of adamantium claws. Deadpool seeks psychiatric help from Doctor Bong, and they conclude that to stop being so down, he needs Wolverine.

Deadpool doesn’t need therapy or medicine to help him. He’s more than happy with just getting stabbed with two sets of claws in the back. This helps him work through his issues, and feel a lot better for his actions. Even if Wolverine didn’t know he was what the doctor ordered.

8 Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe

A series that might be far too extreme for the MCU, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is exactly what the title of the graphic novel says it is. Deadpool does, in fact, kill the majority of the Marvel Universe. After being brainwashed, no one is safe from Deadpool’s murderous spree, not even his good pal Wolverine.

Deadpool’s swords in this Elseworld comic are carbonadium, a metal created by the Russians as a synthetic form of adamantium. This material allows Deadpool to easily counter Wolverine’s healing factor, and he cuts his head clean off.

7 Deadpool Vs. Old Man Logan

As if Wolverine couldn’t get any grumpier, there comes Old Man Logan. Deadpool and Wolverine are both regenerative in their powers, but while one age and becomes crankier, the other gets far wackier. The two compete to find and save a newly discovered Omega-level mutant, and this mini-series features a great number of fun scenes and emotional ones.

This five-issue miniseries may feature as inspiration for the upcoming Deadpool 3, considering it’s a crazed road trip featuring Wolverine and Deadpool. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, considering Old Man Logan was used for the basis of 2017’s Logan, Hugh Jackman’s curtain call to the role of Wolverine.

6 Uncanny X-Force

It may have been a few decades in the making, but 2010 saw Deadpool and Wolverine teaming up for more than just an issue. Wolverine and Deadpool became official teammates, in which they put aside their rivalry (somewhat) to kill others for the greater good of Mutants and the world.

In secret, Wolverine forged the X-Force, a black ops team of mutants with slick grey and black costumes. Wolverine called upon those he could trust to get the job done, one member being Deadpool of course. The two may not interact much in Uncanny X-Force, but they’re a team, and that’s what matters.

5 Wolverine/Deadpool: The Decoy

In a one-shot comic issue, Wolverine/Deadpool: The Decoy sees the two begrudgingly teaming up to defeat an otherworldly presence. Wolverine encounters a killer robot from space that has a mission to kill Jean Grey. Confusingly, Jean Grey is already dead, meaning Wolverine needs to find another way for this indestructible robot to complete its mission.

Wolverine recruits the help of Deadpool and dresses him as Jean Grey to distract the alien robot. Deadpool simply stands there and looks as pretty as he feels, whilst Wolverine battles the robot. It’s a good look into their complicated friendship, with many laughs.

4 Deadpool (2013) #17-18

The mystery surrounding Deadpool’s stolen organs unravels as he finds himself in a North Korean internment camp. They have been using his organs to create a clone army of mutant super soldiers funded by the North Korean government. A wild story only works with wild characters, and Wolverine is once again involved in the mayhem, alongside Captain America himself.

The trio of characters fight their way through North Korea to freedom, and battle anyone in their way, even if they have the powers that were extracted from Captain America, Wolverine, and Deadpool. It’s a random and fun trio and one that sees plenty of destruction.

3 Cable & Deadpool #44

Despite a series being called Cable & Deadpool, Cable is dead come issue 44. To help fill the hole in his heart, and to try and annoy someone else, Deadpool goes looking for the one person whom he knows will stab him rather than tolerate him, and looks for Wolverine.

Wolverine and Deadpool find themselves, once again, at odds when they enter the same Hydra base for different reasons. Deadpool gets in Wolverine’s way and has his head cut off and used as a soccer ball. Despite the initial view of sports, the comic is about friendships lost and gained.

2 Deadpool (2013) #15

deadpool issue 15 wolverine and deadpool

Rarely do Wolverine and Deadpool have an encounter that doesn’t end with metal in a body. In the case of Deadpool issue 15, one such rarity occurs. Deadpool is in search of answers and finds himself being tracked by a special ops team. It’s a great issue that sees Wolverine and Deadpool working together to kill a lot of people.

Part of the panels for this comic are like Home Alone, if it was R-rated. Deadpool puts knives in a microwave to make them explode, whilst also making sure to accurately shoot people in the head. It’s one of the rare team-ups from Wolverine and Deadpool that doesn’t involve them fighting each other.

1 Wolverine #88

In the case of comics, the first issue of something iconic is often famed and pricey. In 1994’s run of Wolverine, the 88th issue features the first meeting of Deadpool and Wolverine. This year would be the beginning of a dangerous and rocky friendship, and one that has appeared in comics across the decades. In this issue, the two begin their friendship in the most Deadpool and Wolverine way possible: with a lot of stabbing.

Deadpool trashes an apartment to get his ex-girlfriend back. An act that brings Wolverine to the scene. Within an instant, sparks fly, as the two insult each other, up until the point where Deadpool stabs Wolverine through the chest with dual swords. It’s the beginning of a beautifully bloody friendship.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to release in theaters on September 6, 2024.
