In spite of the condition that USG Ishimura is in, there are a lot of locked doors that Dead Space players don't have access to. Even with gradually upgrading security clearances over the course of the story, there are still some doors and crates that can't be opened. They require a Master Override clearance to unlock them.

The tricky part, however, is that this special level of security clearance cannot be acquired through the main story. Instead, players must complete a side quest called 'You Are Not Authorized'. This guide will show Dead Space players how to complete this side quest and where to find the all the doors and creates that Master Override clearance.

This guide contains spoilers, so players should proceed with caution.

How to Start 'You Are Not Authorized'

This side quest can be started in the fourth chapter. After meeting with Hammond in the Captain's Nest, there is a terminal to the right that players can access. Once started, this side quest requires players to track down seven RIGs of high ranking officers from the Ishimura crew. Even though players can get this side quest during the fourth chapter, they won't be able to get all the RIGs until the tenth chapter. The locations of the rigs are as follows.

  • White's RIG - In the area where players had to calibrate the ADS cannons during the fourth chapter, move towards the edge of the trench and look to the left. White's RIG is floating next to his body.
  • Voelkner's RIG - Go to the area where Dead Space players had to go outside the Ishimura to get to Engineering at the start of the third chapter. Move toward the far left to find this RIG.
  • Holt's RIG - During the sixth chapter, when neutralizing the fifth Wheezer, destroy the tendrils in this area. On one of the walkways, concealed by a tendril, is Holt's RIG.
  • Dallas's RIG - This RIG is acquired as part of the main story in the seventh chapter. Picking this RIG up also increases security clearance to Level 3.
  • Rousseau's RIG - This RIG can be acquired once players have security clearance Level 3. Go back to Engineering and look for a door that requires Level 3.
  • Bailey's RIG - Before fixing the communications array during the eighth chapter, there will be a side room where players can find Bailey's RIG sitting on a desk along with an audio log.
  • Benson's RIG - When heading to the Crew Deck during the tenth chapter, players will go through a tram tunnel. Benson's RIG can be found in here.

Return to the Bridge

Once players have obtained all the RIGs, they must return to the Captain's Nest and use the same terminal to create a Master Override code. Unlike the security clearance level, players get to keep the Master Override code if they beat the game and start New Game Plus.

Where to Find the Master Override Doors/Chests

Once players have the Master Override code, they can use it to open doors and containers that have a star icon on them. These rooms and chests hold valuable resources along with upgrades for weapons like the Line Gun. The locations for these doors and containers is as follows.

  • Bridge - On the 5th Floor.
  • Mining - Look for a door that leads to the Tool Storage Room. It requires the Master Override to open it.
  • Engineering - Go to the Machine Shop. There is a Master Override chest in there.
  • Crew Quarters - There are two Master Override chests in this area. The first one can be found in the Deluxe Quarters while the second one can be found in Holt's room in the Executive Quarters.
  • Hydroponics - Near the start of this area, players can find a Master Override chest.
  • Cargo Bay - During the eleventh chapter, keep an eye out for a Guardian on one of the walls. Nearby this Necromorph is a Master Override chest.
  • Aegis VII - Near the door protected by two Guardians, the final Master Override chest can be found.
