First announced back during July 2021, the remake of Dead Space is finally here. This remake of the 2008 classic survival horror game expands upon the original experience without changing what made the original Dead Space so incredible. While the USG Ishimura may feel familiar to veteran players, this enhanced version of the game has many surprises in store.

Beyond Isaac having a voice and a new face, players can expect to encounter all sorts of helpful changes and a few side quests. This walkthrough will give players an idea of what to expect as they start up Dead Space and begin the first chapter, New Arrivals.

This walkthrough contains spoilers, so players should proceed with caution.

Crash Landing

After adjusting difficulty and other settings as needed, Dead Space players can just enjoy the opening cinematic for the game. Before long, the Kellion crashes in the hangar bay of the USG Ishimura. Before following the team out of the ship, go out the door opposite of that to find a Text Log regarding a background check on both Isaac Clarke and Kendra Daniels. Turn around and follow the team toward the check-in station and the flight lounge.

As players approach the entrance to the flight lounge, the health bar will appear on Isaac's back. Continue following Hammond and Kendra and then go into the small side room to get the damage report for Hammond. Upon interacting with the terminal that brings up the damage report, quarantine will kick in and players will get a first look at the terrifying enemy of the Dead Space series, the Necromorphs.

As the Necromorphs ambush the crew, players will need to run toward the door to their right as fast as possible. Since they have no weapons, it is impossible to fight the Necromorphs at this time. Sprint down the hallway toward the elevator to avoid getting killed.

Grab the Plasma Cutter

When exiting the elevator, move toward the left to find a work station with a partially assembled Plasma Cutter. Grab it and start opening/smashing any boxes in the room as the ammo and other resources they contain will be sorely needed. When ready, shoot the glowing panel next to the door. Upon opening the door, a Necromorph will emerge and attack the player.

When fighting Necromorphs, always aim for the limbs. Shots to the body do less damage. Typically, it is recommended to take out the legs first as then the Necromorph can't run towards the player anymore.

Once the Necromorph is dead, proceed through the door and down the hallway. Before long, players will find themselves in the Tram Control Room. The shutters blocking the windows open, and a brief conversation occurs between Isaac, Kendra, and Hammond. The tram system is offline, and in order to repair it the broken tram car will need to be replaced along with the data board. After a brief tutorial about the objective locator, players will be able to proceed toward the tram repair station.

If uncertain where to go next, use the locator to determine which direction the current tracked objective is. This is especially helpful in zero gravity environments later on in the game.

Stasis Module

While exploring the tram tunnel, players will come across a very unsafe looking door that is opening and closing swiftly like a guillotine blade. It is moving too fast for players to get past it safely, so they will need to grab the nearby Stasis Module. Stasis allows players to slow objects and enemies. This also includes environmental hazards like the nearby door. Shoot stasis at the door just as it is beginning to close and then run through it.

How to Replace the Tram Car

The first step for repairing the tram system is to replace the broken car blocking everything up. To do this, players will first need to operate the panel in the middle of the room to open the door to the tunnel. From there, Dead Space players can use the controls for the two claws on the left and right to attach them to the broken tram car.

The tricky part is that the claw on the right is damaged and doesn't hold onto the tram properly. Thankfully, stasis allows players to work around this. When the claw makes contact with the tram, freeze it with stasis and then run over to the claw on the left and activate it. Once both claws are attached, return to the middle of the platform and use the terminal on the left to replace the damaged tram car.

During this puzzle, players will be periodically attacked by several Necromorphs. Players should be vigilant and keep an eye out as Necromorphs do try to ambush players from behind during this puzzle. Before leaving, make sure to grab the Power Node that is in a box on the wall. Power Nodes are used to upgrade weapons and Isaac's rig. In the original version of the game, there were doors that could only be opened with Power Nodes. Thankfully that is no longer the case, so players don't have to save their Power Nodes for that.

Find a Data Board

Follow the locator to reach the Maintenance Bay where a spare Data Board is stored. One important thing that Dead Space players should keep in mind is that Necromorphs are very cunning. Periodically, players will encounter what appears to be a dead Necromorph laying in the middle of a room or hallway. If they still have limbs, they are just playing dead and will ambush the player when they get close enough. Simply deal with them like any other Necromorph.

After killing the Necromorph, players will encounter the first circuit breaker puzzle. Due to the state of the USG Ishimura, these circut breakers can only power a limited number of devices at once. In this case, players can either use it to power the door to their left or they can open a small storage room. Which door is powered can be switched at any given time, so players can back track to loot the storage room and then go back to the door to the Maintenance Bay.

In the next room, there are small walkways and lots of explosives. While these explosive cylinders can be used to quickly kill Necromorphs, they can cause a lot of damage to players if they are not careful. The Data Board is in a small storage room in the Maintenance Bay on the first floor, but the door has no power and players cannot reach it. In order to fix this, use the elevator to go up to the second floor where another circuit breaker is located.

In this situation, players will need to cut power to the lights in order to divert power to the door downstairs. Without the lights it is much more difficult to spot Necromorphs as they emerge from vents, so players will need to be careful as they go back toward the elevator to go back down to the first floor.

The First Bench

Inside the storage room, players will find the Data Board. Beyond that, there is a Power Node in this room along with the first Bench. As mentioned earlier, Benches can be used to upgrade weapons and Isaac's Rig. Since players will have several Power Nodes at this point, this is a good opportunity to improve either the Plasma Cutter or Isaac's Rig.

When upgrading, it is important to pick and focus on certain things first. For example, having more health and oxygen is important later on, so it is good to focus on upgrading those first.

Install the Data Board

When ready, return to the Tram Control Station and watch out for Necromorphs along the way. At the Tram Control Station, go into the small side room to replace the Data Board and then call the tram to the station. Kendra and Hammond board the tram while Isaac heads back to see if he can help with repairs on the Kellion.

Return to the Kellion

dead-space-remake-chapter-1-walkthrough13

Upon arriving at the Kellion, players will need to use the terminal to get a damage report. Before doing this, players should make sure they are ready for a fight. Shortly after getting the damage report, the ship ends up getting destroyed by Necromorphs and players are thrown out of the ship from the ensuing explosion.

Players will then need to kill several Necromorphs. After the battle, Isaac will get a call from Hammond and Kendra as they find out that they just completely lost their ship and are now stranded. They can't find out anymore until they get the codes off of the Captain's body, but he is dead and is located on the Medical Deck.

When following the locator, players will come across the first Store. These kiosks can be used to purchase resources like ammo, Med Packs, and Power Nodes. Players can also purchase upgraded suits here as well. In fact, the Level 2 Suit is available when players reach the Store for the first time. It costs 10,000 credits, but it is worth it since it increases inventory size and grants players 5% armor. Purchasing suit upgrades also opens up more nodes at the Bench for upgrades.

The Store is also where players can pick up their cosmetic bonuses if they purchased the Deluxe or Collector's Edition of the game. When ready, proceed through the door and the first chapter will end. Keep in mind that the linear level-to-level structure of the original game is gone, so players can back track to the Hangar Bay if they wish to do so.

Dead Space is available now on PlayStation 5, Steam, and Xbox Series X/S.
